Key Information

We operate a “small schools” model – one school made

up of a number of smaller learning communities, which

we call Colleges, each with their own staff and facilities.

Each College is led by its own Headteacher (who is an

Assistant Principal) and has its own team of

approximately 25 teachers and non-teachers, covering

most curriculum areas. Students join one of the Colleges

in Year 7 and remain there for five years before

transferring to College VI, our specialist post-16

provision. In addition, the Creative and Performing Arts

(CPA) College delivers specialist education to students

across the Collegiate in Art, Drama, Design Technology,

Media, Music and Physical Education whilst the MacKay

College co-ordinates inclusion services to students with

additional needs. Small teams, working with just 400

students each, allow us to provide even better pastoral care to all students, as well as engage with learners

and their families in more effective partnerships. They also provide teaching across the curriculum and

learning teams focusing on personalised approaches and best serving the needs of the individual students in

their care.

Information about The Collegiate Trust

Our Trust works in the Crawley and Croydon areas with a clear vision to deliver exceptional education for all.

Such an education achieves excellent outcomes in pupil progress and attainment, a rich creative, cultural

and physical learning experience, and great personal and social development for all pupils. We achieve this

by working with and developing strong teams of staff in each school, under the direction of the Principal of

the school and the Local Governing Body (LGB)

The Trust has grown out of Riddlesdown Collegiate, an outstanding (OFSTED, May 2016) secondary school

in Croydon with almost 2000 students and over 200 staff. Gossops Green, in Crawley, was the next school –

and the first primary – to join the Trust, followed by Waterfield Primary (also in Crawley) on 1st March 2018.

A second secondary, The Quest Academy (in Croydon), joined on 1st June 2018 and two further primaries,

Courtwood Primary and Gilbert Scott Primary (both in Croydon) joined on 1st September 2018. Most recently,

Kenley Primary joined on 1st September 2021.

Each school within the Trust is supported centrally by a designated Director of School Improvement on

teaching and learning issues, the Chief Operating Officer, Chief Finance Officer & HR Manager on business

management and HR issues, and the CEO on wider leadership issues. This complements rather than replaces

in-school functions and allows the Principal and LGB to operate with a high level of autonomy in delivering

the highest standards in their school. The LGB works to a Scheme of Delegation approved by the Trust’s

Board of Directors.

Classics at Riddlesdown Collegiate

We are dedicated to promoting the substantial benefits of Classical subjects at Riddlesdown Collegiate and
are passionate about sharing our enthusiasm for the ancient world with our students. We aim to instil
creative thinking, curiosity, and open-mindedness in our students, alongside the logical and analytical skills
which are inherent in our linguistic and cultural curriculum.

The main aim of the Latin teaching programme is to immerse our students into the classical world, whilst
building their grammatical ability and vocabulary. We seek to challenge them linguistically and teach them
deductive reasoning. In addition to this, our teaching of Classical Civilisation facilitates students to explore
more fully the culture, literature, art, and history of the ancient world, in order to improve their
understanding of past civilisations and their impact on modern society.

Our provision in Key Stage 3 enables students to later study either or both OCR Classical Civilisation and OCR
Latin at GCSE. Therefore, our curriculum develops both linguistic and cultural skills in three lessons over a
two-week timetable. All students work from the Cambridge Latin Course. In Year 7 and 8, all students study
Latin. In Year 9 two ability-based teaching groups in each College study Latin, totalling 8 classes in each Year
Group. In Key Stage 4 we have two Latin GCSE classes and three Classical Civilisation classes in both Year 10
and Year 11. At A Level, we also deliver Classical Civilisation and Latin in both Year 12 and Year 13. We also
offer Ancient Greek as an ab initio course for Year 12s. Over two years they study Ancient Greek in extra-
curricular sessions, working towards taking a GCSE qualification at the end of Year 13. A great number of our
students go on to study classical subjects at university and a number receive offers from Oxbridge.

Our approach to the delivery of our subjects is reflective and adaptable to the changing needs of our students
and developments in pedagogical approaches. The learning of our students is supported through the
provision of challenging and appropriate teaching resources and materials, replaced and upgraded as
necessary. We also supplement our curriculum with a great variety of extra-curricular opportunities. We
regularly organise trips to a variety of classical sites, including Bath, Hadrian’s Wall, The London Mithraeum,
and the British Museum. For older students, there are a variety of visits to see classical plays and lectures,
which enable the students to approach the material that they have studied in the classroom in a different
light. In addition to this, we run an annual trip to a European destination, usually Greece or Italy. We are also
involved in the Minimus Project and send our students to teach Latin to those in local primary schools. Each
year we participate in teacher training by trainee mentoring and running training events through our links
to the Classics PGCE departments at both Cambridge and King’s College London.

We currently have four full-time and one part-time specialist Latin and Classics teachers. Our Classics staff
work closely as a team but also have links with other subject areas, particularly Drama, English and History.
The department are energetic and committed to ensuring that all students enjoy full access to Latin and
Classics and achieve the highest standards of which they are capable.

Job Description

Purpose of the Post: To teach a full timetable across the age and ability range of the

College, delivering agreed Schemes of Work and contributing
fully to the subject area and College.
