As a contract Unix Engineer, you will play a crucial role in supporting our infrastructure, optimizing existing systems, and driving automation initiatives. If you have a proven track record in Unix system administration, along with expertise in scripting, automation, and DevOps methodologies, we want to hear from you!
Responsibilities:
- Provide support for the deployment and migration of services to RHEL 8/9, ensuring smooth and efficient transitions.
- Contribute to the planning and execution of future Data Centre migration projects, ensuring minimal disruption to operations.
- Develop and enhance automation capabilities to support disaster recovery activities, improving system resilience and recovery time.
- Create and maintain a secure RedHat 8/9 build image that adheres to industry best practices, ensuring system security and compliance.
- Offer ongoing support for existing UNIX infrastructure, troubleshooting issues, and implementing necessary enhancements.
- Optimize performance and efficiency of both existing and new UNIX infrastructure components, identifying and implementing improvements.
- Provide support for the deployment and management of PAM (Pluggable Authentication Modules) to enhance system security.
- Administer Samba to ensure seamless integration and access to file and print services in UNIX environments.
- Support the deployment and management of Ansible Tower for streamlined configuration management and automation.
Requirements:
- Demonstrable commercial experience in Unix system administration, specifically with RHEL 6/7/8, Solaris, and Solaris Zones.
- Proficiency in scripting languages such as Bash and Perl, with a focus on automation and process improvement.
- Solid understanding of DevOps practices and experience in implementing infrastructure automation.
- Experience with Jenkins for system configuration and pipeline creation and management.
- Familiarity with load balancer technologies such as HAProxy and keepalived.
- Knowledge of monitoring tools like Grafana, Nagios, and InfluxDB for performance analysis.
- Strong familiarity with Agile methodologies, including Kanban/Scrum and retrospectives.
- Understanding of Cyber Essentials Plus methodology for security and compliance.
- Proactive and customer-focused mindset, with excellent communication and engagement skills.
- Risk-aware approach, with the ability to identify and mitigate risks effectively.
- Strong team player with the ability to make informed technical decisions.
- Experience in designing and leading infrastructure projects.
- Creative problem-solving abilities, embracing innovation, and sharing knowledge with stakeholders.
