Job Introduction

To deliver revenue, profit and cash in EMEA Content Sales-led Markets in line with targets and growth ambitions through expert client and commercial team leadership, and careful trade-offs between routes to market, including between local and global customers.

To work upstream with Production teams, representing when needed Global Markets Content Sales teams and interests, to help define content strategy and our content investment plan. To provide commercial and editorial feedback on projects on the slate. To co-ordinate across Global Markets content sales, working with Americas sales, to define go-to-market strategy and timing for major titles and to make local/global customer trade-offs.

Main Responsibilities
  • Is accountable for achieving revenue and profit targets across lines of business in Content Sales-led Markets in EMEA: French-speaking territories, German-speaking Territories, Italy and Iberia. Has regional deal approval and expenditure approval authority.
  • Develops a commercial strategy across EMEA Content Sales-led Markets activity to maximize the value of BBCS IP and grow sales and profit in order to underpin BBCS’s investment in IP.
  • Is across at all times the latest financial position in EMEA Content Sales-led Markets and tracking versus budgets and latest forecasts and communicates trends and changes affecting budgets, forecasts and delivery.
  • Demonstrates an expert understanding and knowledge of content, rights frameworks and windowing strategy across BBCS. Leads the adaptation, interpretation and execution of commercial strategy in region.
  • Owns jointly EMEA Content Sales-led Market customer accounts in top 40 clients globally, working in conjunction with Account Directors and sales teams to further strategic partnership working with these clients.
  • Develops top-level client relationships and uses these to derive new business opportunities, and is restless in driving teams to find and secure new clients
  • Maintains an in-depth knowledge of EMEA market conditions, partners and competitors; is the company’s expert on content sales in EMEA Content Sales-led Markets, providing insight, for example, on content investment and content demand.
  • Ensures commercial teams understand pricing requirements and profitability of different deal types.
  • Is responsible for Global Markets content sales link to Global/North America & Latin America and UK sales teams
  • Is our Global Markets representative and leads Global Markets delegation in content investment processes.
  • Acts as Global Markets’ link to producers, representing the combined Global Markets sales effort and latest market intelligence, sharing advice on projects both creatively and in terms of most effective approach to market.
  • Works alongside production teams and President, US Distribution, to agree content strategies and investment plans.
  • Liaises with Production to ensure good flow of information on future pipeline and co-ordinated approach to commissions and co-productions involving clients in Content Sales Markets, EMEA.
  • Manages Global Markets sales relationship with trade and customer marketing.
  • Agrees and communicates sales strategy and go-to-market timing for top titles, working with President, US Distribution
  • Recruits, leads, motivates, develops, manages and retains top commercial talent.
  • Ensures compliance with BBC Code of Conduct, Editorial Standards, BBCS values and all other commercial policy requirements, making sure that all business is conducted with the highest standards of integrity and ethics.

The successful candidate should be able to demonstrate the following:

  • Strong business and sales leadership skills with a deep passion for content finding its place
  • Influencing & networking externally and internally, including at most senior levels within a matrixed organisation across timezones
  • Commercial acumen combined with strategic thinking and complex problem solving: able to ‘see’ all variables and their financial impact in complex negotiations
  • Sales- and results-focused
  • Ability to collaborate across organisational boundaries without need to ‘own’ all activities
  • Strong communication and presentation skills

Professional Experience

  • Substantial experience in a senior management, commercial role is essential.
  • Substantial experience in a consumer-facing business is essential.
  • Experience in a global or regional role is desirable.
  • Television distribution experience is desirable.

Package Description

This role leads a region within our Global Markets division. Global Markets delivers revenue in the hundreds of millions of pounds and comprises 2 EMEA regions, Asia, Greater China and ANZ. We employ circa 400 people across our international locations and run businesses across Content Sales, Channels and Streaming, and Brands and Licensing. Our purpose is to take BBC Studios’ content to market in the best way possible, to support the BBC Group creatively and financially.
