We are looking for positive, compassionate and caring Support Workers to join our team in Ilford where we support adults with learning disabilities. We currently have Full time and Part time opportunities on a permanent basis.

You must be able to demonstrate a real commitment to Mencap and the work that we do, alongside the wonderful people we support. We are looking for people with a ‘can-do’ attitude who are strongly motivated, outgoing, caring and have a calm demeanour when needed.
Experience is not necessary however a genuine interest and passion to support people with learning disabilities is essential.
The people you will be supporting love a variety of activities including music, watching television, dancing, shopping, baking, involving in meal preparation, art and craft, painting, gardening, socialising, going on day trips, cinema, being part of their community and can at times have a hectic schedule. All the above play a significant part in their life.
As well as the team that support them, family members are very involved in support. Being social and having conversations about things that are of interest and daily life is something they truly value. However, sometimes crowded, or noisy environment are not fun, and that is something that some of the people we support find difficult to manage.
Indoor activities include music sessions, one to one interactive session, art and craft, painting, involving in meal preparation and laundry, life skills and television. We support a variety of people from different cultures so it would be helpful to have some cooking skills and idea's in this area. You will be provided with adequate training to enable you to do your work confidently which include Positive behaviour support, Emergency first aid and many more during your induction training.
As a Support Worker, flexibility is key for both yourself and for the service, you may be required to work a variety of different shifts throughout the week, including mornings, evenings, sleep ins and weekends (You will receive an enhanced flat rate payment of £60.00 for any sleep in shifts carried out. The payment for sleep ins is non-contractual). The best thing about flexibility It's a two-way street, while we may require that you work a variety of shifts, we also understand that you’ll have your own commitments and we will try to factor this into our rotas.
What does a Support Worker do?
As a Support Worker you will be expected to provide an outstanding level of support that will help to ensure the people we support live a more comfortable, dignified, liberated and happy life. You will have excellent communication skills and be a naturally caring and patient personality. Typical responsibilities may include:
- Supporting people to live independently – budget management, paying bills, housework, organising appointments and cooking delicious healthy meals.
- Excellent communication skills and Relationship building – supporting the people we support to understand the world around them and promoting positive relationships.
- Community & Social Inclusion - supporting individuals to access and participate in their local community and social events to promote life skills and individuality.
- Personal care - helping people to get ready for the day.This may include prompting the people we support to take their medication and assisting with bathing, showering and using the bathroom.Not all Support Worker roles include high levels of personal care.
