The job itself
A 20-year-old young man, living in Barmby on the Marsh (near Howden, Goole, and Selby) is seeking 2 reliable Support Workers to support for 12 hours per week during term time and 24 hours per week during education holidays. These hours are to be split between 2 workers.
The young man has complex medical conditions, including Epilepsy and Diabetes. He also has reduced mobility and communication issues due to FND. He has a learning disability. He does struggle with Anxiety and OCD. Effective communication is essential, therefore the candidate must be thoughtful and considerate in their communication and actions. At times he can struggle to communicate verbally, but it is important to include him in any conversations.
The young man has an interest in the outdoors, especially gardening and animals, particularly birds. He enjoys art and crafts and baking. Sport is a massive interest to him, especially football. He supports Hull City and is a season ticket holder, hence the worker may be required to take him to the matches. He is also a massive Formula One fan. He enjoys trips out and we are keen for him to socialise with other young adults.
Duties will include monitoring his medical conditions and treatment if needed. Training will be provided. Supporting the young man on trips out of the family home, promoting life skills and independence and encouraging him to socialise. It is essential that the successful applicant can drive and has their own vehicle, there will be opportunity to use the family vehicle if needed. He does use an electric wheelchair to mobilise in and is only able to walk a very short distance with support. This post will involve lifting and handling, especially when transferring him from wheelchair to other chairs and he needs support to toilet. If needed lifting and handling training can be provided. At times both Support Workers will work together, especially for day trips out and sporting activities such as swimming.
DBS/Reference checks will be required for this post - Cost to be met by the local authority.
