Job description
Applications are invited for the Bernard Quaritch summer internship programme. A maximum of two full-time positions are available, each for a minimum duration of four weeks (normally undertaken some time between July and September, with working hours Mon-Fri 9.30am-5.30pm). During your internship you will gain experience of bookselling at one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious antiquarian book dealers.
About us
Founded in 1847, Bernard Quaritch Ltd is one of the oldest antiquarian and rare book and manuscript dealers in the world. We specialise in art and architecture; early printed books and medieval manuscripts; English literature and history; European literature; the human sciences; Islamic manuscripts and books on Asia; music; science, medicine, and gastronomy; travel; photography and photobooks; as well as posters and propaganda.
We exhibit at the world's leading book and photo fairs throughout the year including New York, London, Paris, and California. Our staff regularly speak at conferences and book fairs, as well as contributing to scholarly publications. We work with an extensive range of both private and institutional clients in the UK and globally, our valuations department provides formal valuations for probate or insurance purposes, and we also negotiate private-treaty sales of archives in many fields, as well as handling auction commissions in all specialisms.
Our publishing arm has been in regular action since our foundation - in the nineteenth century our authors included Michael Faraday, William Morris, Owen Jones, and A.W.N. Pugin, and more recent publications include the ground-breaking three-volume History of Photography in China by Terry Bennett.
About you
You can demonstrate a keen interest in rare books and manuscripts and the rare book trade, are knowledgeable and passionate about one or more of our subject areas, are a careful researcher, and are comfortable in a business environment. You speak and write English fluently and ideally have a working knowledge of another language (ancient or modern). Previous experience with rare books and manuscripts, in any context, would be a bonus but is not a necessity. You must have the right to work in the UK.
About the role
You will answer the telephone and receive visitors, and assist with packing, deliveries, photography, and other routine administrative duties. Working alongside our booksellers, you will also provide research and cataloguing support to them. Our premises covers five floors, with several flights of stairs, and you may be required to lift and carry medium loads. Remuneration will be £11.95 per hour.
How to apply
To apply, email your CV with a covering letter to Jonathan Harrison ([email protected]), with ‘2023 Internship’ in the subject line. Please include the date on which you would be available to start work.
Please note: Any applications not submitted by email, as described above, may not be seen. Please do not apply through Indeed.
All applications must be received by 19 May 2023 and will be acknowledged by email. Interviews will take place in June.
