Job description
Opportunity in Dentistry for UW students or others seeking part-time work. No experience necessary.
Maybe you were originally looking at customer service, bank teller, retail, restaurant host, server, barista, or food service type positions? Have you ever thought about Dental Assisting? You don’t need to be interested in dentistry although if you’re already thinking about a future in health care, this might be a great introduction.
We’re open Monday – Friday and have two shifts: morning shift is approximately 8:45 am to 1:15 pm and afternoon shift is 1:45 pm to 6:15 pm. Each shift is 4.5 hrs and can vary day-to-day. If you can work either shift, at least three days per week, then we are interested. Even if you can’t work a full shift (due to class schedule or something), but are within an hour of our target, we may still be interested. Of course, you can work more days as well. Let us know in your first correspondence what days and times (morning and/or afternoon), you can work, so we can piece together a combination of candidates that may be able to fill our schedule. For UW students, we know your schedule changes every quarter but as long as you can put in at least three shifts per week, this could be your college job. Attendance is extremely important; if you plan to take a break between quarters every quarter; or if you’re going to cancel work at the last minute, every other week because something came up, this isn’t going to work. We’re looking for someone who plans to stick around for a year or longer, not just one quarter.
We’re hoping to hire quickly as we need the help. Typically, the afternoon shifts are taken first so you would be competing against fewer candidates if you can work the morning shifts.
Like anything new, there’s a lot to learn in the beginning. It’s mostly learning the names of things and the steps for different procedures. You won’t be able to learn this quick enough by just showing up; it takes some studying but every UW student we’ve worked with learned this quick; it’s not as hard as school. Assisting has a minimal science requirement; it’s more like arts & crafts, customer service, food prep skills, caretaker and unfortunately, dishwasher all rolled into one. Also, there’s some blood from time to time so it’s best if you don’t faint at the sight of it. If you happen to speak Japanese or Cantonese, that would help with a few of our patients. Vietnamese, Khmer, Spanish and Russian are also useful from time to time.
Starting wage is $18 per hour. By just showing up and improving regularly, we can increase your wage fairly quickly. We want you at $20-$23 (or more?), per hour within the first year but you must be super reliable, have a positive attitude, and learn the tasks quickly.
If hired, you will have to register with the state; there’s a $40 fee and annual renewals of $21. We’ll help you with the process. You’ll also need scrubs, jacket (health care uniform) and protective glasses. These are pretty inexpensive. We just want to be upfront to minimize any surprises.
Thanks for looking and good luck with your search.
