Your role as a Structural Packaging Engineer will be to provide guidance to internal matrix teams, banners, and vendors on all aspects of structural packaging. You’ll be responsible for project managing structural packaging activities, structural packaging briefs, advise on packaging sustainability, identifying opportunities for packaging improvement, sustainability improvement and cost reduction.

We’re adopting a hybrid approach with some office and some home working, on average 40-60% in the office. Your office location? This person will be UK based with our Head Office in Southampton, or we could explore the option of being based in one of our other retail banners head offices in Paddington or Yeovil.

Your role as a Structural Packaging Engineer will be to provide guidance to internal matrix teams, banners, and vendors on all aspects of structural packaging. You’ll be responsible for project managing structural packaging activities, structural packaging briefs, advise on packaging sustainability, identifying opportunities for packaging improvement, sustainability improvement and cost reduction.
To be successful in this role you will:
- Captures the needs of the brand, consumer, product experience and constraints of the supply chain and turns them into clear packaging specifications that identify value added opportunities
- Define upfront project success criteria (innovation, sustainability, affordability and quality) and drive clarity throughout each project
- Brief suppliers and leads the development of technical solutions through proof-of-concept to production and implementation of each project
- Delivers technical specifications while ensuring the ‘end of life’ recycling of our packaging materials have been considered
- Identifies and uses appropriate tools, processes and resources for problem solving.
- Actively listens and relates to others in an accepting and respectful manner, values differences and builds rapport
- Adapts their communication style and approach as appropriate, using effective diplomacy when and where required
- Works co-operatively, actively building cohesive relationships within and across teams (internally or externally)
What experience you’ll bring:
- Structural packaging experience as a Packaging Engineer or Technologist in either the retail or packaging sectors.
- Experience within packaging production or packaging material manufacture.
- Good understanding of packaging production processes and materials across all retail packaging formats.
- Solid understanding of print processes &‘Print quality Management’ is desirable.
- Solid understanding of critical success factors for readability of retail & warehouse barcoding is desirable.
- CAD (ArtiosCAD/CAPE) experience and packaging prototyping skills.
- Industry expert knowledge about primary and transit packaging materials, innovations, trends.
- Demonstrate a good insight of how packaging contributes to customer experience and purchase decision making.
