Job description
The role
We are seeking to appoint an Independent Reviewer for the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE). The SQE was introduced in 2021 as a centralised assessment for anyone wanting to qualify as a solicitor in England and Wales. The Independent Reviewer takes an overview of the SQE to provide additional assurance that the SQE assessment and standard setting procedures are being correctly implemented by the SRA and Kaplan (our SQE assessment organisation). They also check whether SQE candidate performance standards are being maintained.
We are looking for an assessment expert who has recent experience of assessment delivery and standard setting procedures in high stakes assessments and who has a strong commitment to equality and diversity and fair assessments.

What we expect
- knowledge, understanding and recent experience of assessment and standard setting procedures in high stakes assessments
- an understanding of, or an ability to develop an understanding of, the solicitors profession in England and Wales and how this should affect the design and delivery of a high stakes professional examination
- a strong communicator who can gain the credibility of a range of stakeholders including solicitors, members of the SRA Board, assessment experts and the SRA’s assessment organisation
- experience of evaluating assessments and writing evaluation reports.
Ideally the successful applicant will start in early 2024 for a period of up to 5 years. The commitment is around 20-25 days year. Some of the activities can be undertaken from home, but others will require travel, including to assessment centres across England and Wales.
The work will be remunerated at a day rate of £650 per day, plus reasonable travelling expenses.
The successful candidate will be engaged via a contract for services.
