About the role

This role offers a fantastic opportunity to develop your career as part of the Leisure, Culture and Communities service where you will be responsible for managing the Sports and Physical Activity provision.

The overall purpose and function of the Leisure, Culture and Communities directorate is to lead the delivery of programmes, services and activities that enable the residents of Wiltshire to be physically and mentally active and to play an active role in their communities, with a particular focus on groups who face engagement barriers and inequalities.

Sport and Physical Activity is at the heart of the vision for the Leisure, Culture and Communities directorate and has a key role to play in contributing to the council’s priorities. This role is the lead professional for the council in delivering Sport and Physical Activity provision and as such, the postholder will work with their team, partners, stakeholders and local organisations to increase levels of Physical Activity in Wiltshire and to improve health outcomes for Wiltshire Residents.

Areas of responsibility will include:

  • Manage the sport and physical activity service ensuring it contributes to Wiltshire Council’s corporate objectives and Public Health priorities
  • To lead on the development and management of an innovative range of sport and physical activity programmes, including the Active Health GP referral programme, Get Wiltshire Walking, Ability Sports, StreetGames and Walking Sports, as well as new interventions, including the setting and management of performance indicators, targets and budget allocation.
  • Have full accountability for the Sport and Physical Activity team, including all performance management, assignment of work programmes, disciplinary matters, training and development and employee well-being
  • To act as the strategic lead for the service and to develop, implement and review a new sport and physical activity service plan with a focus on place-based delivery and which prioritises areas of Wiltshire where data indicates there are significant levels of deprivation.
  • Ensure interventions create pathways and opportunities for individuals to engage with the wider Leisure, Culture and Communities offer
  • Increase participation in sport and physical activity and reduce inactivity levels, developing interventions that target audiences who face barriers to participation and health inequalities and ensuring programmes aid social mobility and focus on early intervention and prevention.

About you

We will be required to be a motivated self-starter who is passionate about enabling more Wiltshire residents to become physically active and committed to tackling health inequalities.

The successful candidate must be able to think strategically and develop effective partnerships with internal colleagues and external organisations, as well as having the ability to problem solve to navigate the various challenges of working with individuals with health conditions, those who are inactive and audiences who face barriers to engagement.
