Job description
You will join the School of Allied Health Professions, Nursing and Midwifery, working with Professor Judy Clegg on a research study. A Research Assistant is required to work on a study funded by the National Institute of Health Research (£1.8 million for four years). The title of the research study is Intensive Interaction for children and young people with profound and multiple learning disabilities: INTERACT trial'.
The research study is led by the University of Kent and the Clinical Trials Unit at the University of York. The University of Sheffield and the University of Newcastle are co-investigators in the research. The research study is evaluating an interaction and communication approach called Intensive Interaction. The study is employing a randomized controlled trial (RCT) to evaluate the effectiveness of Intensive Interaction for children and young people with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD). Educational settings across England for children and young people with PMLD will be recruited to the study. Speech and Language Therapists who work into the settings (or outside of the settings) will be recruited to the study and trained to deliver Intensive Interaction to practitioners who work in the settings along with family carers of children and young people with PMLD who attend the settings. The trained practitioners and family carers will deliver Intensive Interaction to the children and young people. A RCT will be used to evaluate the effectiveness of the delivery of the Intensive Interaction to the children and young people. A range of outcome measures are employed to measure the potential effectiveness.
You will work with Professor Clegg and the research team to design and deliver the Intensive Interaction training and to supervise the trainees as they deliver the Intensive Interaction to the children and young people with PMLD. You will work into other aspects of the evaluation and research study including the patient and public engagement in the research. You will also work with Professor Clegg to support research related activity and other duties. The post is based in the School of Allied Health Professions, nursing and midwifery and may involve some research visits to educational settings across England.
You will have an internationally recognised qualification in speech and language therapy, and registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
