To assess and manage risk relating to out of hours referrals to Adult’s and Children’s Social Care and respond to situations which cannot be safely left until the next working day.

The Cheshire East Emergency Duty Team aims to provide the best possible service for children, families and vulnerable adults across the borough. Working closely with partner agencies and our daytime colleagues we aim to provide seamless, holistic support and intervention at evenings, nights, weekends and bank holidays.
As a Social Worker on the team you will provide a high level of risk assessment in complex cases and carry cases to completion whenever possible.
You need to have the skills to support other staff and professionals to deal with complex issues and offer advice when appropriate. You should be confident, flexible and able to work on your own initiative. The work is fast paced and you need to be able to make decisions with confidence.
You will be required to use a variety of IT databases to record your work. Training on relevant systems will be provided.
Applicants must be willing to attend training to be an ‘Approved Mental Health Professional under the Mental Health Act’
1. Carry out a range of social work tasks in accordance with Council policies and procedures.
2. Take sufficient action to make safe the specific presenting issue and make decisions in accordance with that action enabling situations to be held until the next working day.
3. Conduct initial investigation, along with colleagues in other agencies, of Child Protection referrals and to initiate statutory protective action where required.
4. Intervene effectively in crisis situations and, where appropriate, to seek to provide alternatives to the need to accommodate children and young people.
5. Conduct assessments under the Mental Health Act and to fulfil the other statutory functions of an Approved Mental Health Professional under the Act. To take part in admissions or arrange alternatives to formal admission where necessary.
6. Initiate investigations in line with the Safeguarding of Vulnerable Adults procedure, including being party to strategy discussions with partner agencies.
7. Conduct assessments in the case of vulnerable adults for domiciliary or residential/ nursing care, arrange admission and complete the necessary documentation.
8. Oversee assessments and agree actions taken by sessional workers who contribute to the Emergency Duty Team rota.
9. Participate in consultation with the relevant manager on call and to ensure that the manager is made aware of any issues of major importance or concerns.
10. Maintain appropriate records and documentation in accordance with Council requirements and ensure they are properly stored.
11. Be available for duty according to the Emergency Duty Team rotas which cover evenings, nights, weekends, bank holidays, concessionary and extra statutory holidays.
12. Be available, by arrangement, outside of normal working hours to attend meetings, case conferences, training, etc.
