The Christie is an international leader in cancer research and development and the largest cancer treatment centre of its kind in Europe.
The role will form part of the leadership team of the Estate and Facilities Division
The role will take responsibility for identified site services management functions including Domestic
Services, Deep Clean, Residential & Waste Management, including portering distribution and pest
control. Elements of this service are provided 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.
The role will require ensuring legal and statutory compliance for the site services including meeting
national cleaning standards.
This role includes operating and being based at our main site in Withington as well as our satellite sites across the wider Greater Manchester and Cheshire areas.
Pay – Band 8b £56,164 - £65,262
37 ½ Hours per week
(27 days leave plus Bank holidays rising incrementally on years of service)

As our Site Services Manager, you will be responsible for the overall leadership, management, and performance of all functions under their control, including the following:
o Domestic cleaning
o Deep cleaning (including management of Deep Clean schedule)
o Provide Deep clean services to minimise the risk of Hospital Acquired Infections recognising this is key to Infection Prevention and Control
o Discharge cleaning
o Provide cleaning services to all clinical and non-clinical areas adhering to the National Cleaning Standards 2021
o Provide periodic cleaning programme / People shift rota’s
o Waste management / Provide waste removal services for all waste streams
o Ensure systems and procedures are in place for the effective and safe management of the service
o Environmental walkabouts and actions are undertaken regularly to ensure high standards and compliance domestic cleaning services, deep cleaning and waste management along with environmental standards.
As a key senior member of our team the role will involve organising strategic plans with objectives and tactics for service development and improvement including key areas such as managing change, culture, and behaviour development programmes, Site Services improvement programmes and contributing to the estate and decarbonisation strategies, inclusive of waste management targets.
The Christie is one of Europe’s leading cancer centres, treating over 60,000 patients a year. We are based in Manchester and serve a population of 3.2 million across Greater Manchester & Cheshire, but as a national specialist around 15% patients are referred to us from other parts of the country. We provide radiotherapy through one of the largest radiotherapy departments in the world; chemotherapy on site and through 14 other hospitals; highly specialist surgery for complex and rare cancer; and a wide range of support and diagnostic services. We are also an international leader in research, with world first breakthroughs for over 100 years. We run one of the largest early clinical trial units in Europe with over 300 trials every year. Cancer research in Manchester, most of which is undertaken on the Christie site, has been officially ranked the best in the UK.
Site Services Management
- Ensuring Standard operating procedures are developed and disseminated for Domestics, Deep Cleaning, pest control, rota management, Residential Accommodation & Waste Management including portering distribution.
- Attend respective committees and groups, presenting and communicating on development projects and reporting activity progress.
- Supporting the contract management performance of any externally sourced and related functions such as on the main site, satellite sites and any Trust location and projects.
- Development of SLA’s (Service Level Agreements) for all functions under their control and consulting/seeking agreement with stakeholders.
- Plan and organise activities for all areas of responsibility where formulation and adjustments are required to complex activities, including databases. This will include deploying staff for day-to-day activities to satisfy priority elements of areas responsible.
- Provide, receive and be able to interpret highly complex specialist information and documentation from consultants, statutory agencies, heads of departments and business managers for all areas under direct control.
- Review, interpret and appreciate complex facts, data, and situations. Information will include comparisons over several elements, conflicting demands and consider legislation, Health Technical Memorandums (HTM’s), NHS requirements, government and local council guidance, trust requirements and targets in relation to Waste Management.
- Plan and coordinate monitoring requirements, ensuring that any data return information is committed within timescales on behalf of the Trust.
- Lead responsibility for producing, developing, and formatting reports / spreadsheets from various electronic systems that can be used to provide information within reports to executive teams.
- Carry out analysis and investigate to resolve data regarding, staff rotas, performance and shortages, resource requirements, trends regarding waste, complaints, incidents and comments.
- Continually monitor and review scorecard data, agree target and raise performance issues with respective staff.
- Develop processes, systems, and supervision along with resources to ensure 24/7 aspects of the services are delivered day and night and managed appropriately including operational manuals.
- Organising medium and long-term strategic plans with rationale, objectives and tactics for service development and improvement including key areas such as managing change, restructuring, culture, and behaviour development programmes, Site Services programmes and contributing to the estate and decarbonisation strategies, inclusive of waste management targets.
- Oversee and organise the design and conduct of surveys and audit programs designed to improve services throughout areas of responsibility areas and ensure results are being correctly applied and recorded within site services functions e.g., work programs and schedules
- Carry out specialist project planning and management related to areas of responsibility e.g., new waste systems and streams, domestic services technology, and deep clean requirements.
- Supporting the contract management performance of any externally sourced and related functions at any of the Trust property portfolio.
- Responsible for environmental inspections and take appropriate actions to ensure maximum scores are attained for a number of bodies including:
- Keep evidence in such a format that the Trust can demonstrate that controls are in place for all objectives and risks associated with areas of responsibility and that reporting supervisors and staff do the same.
- Policy and service development & implementation for Domestics, Deep Clean, Residential Accommodation & Waste Management including portering distribution.
- Take into account the whole organisation in terms of governance with responsibility for planning and organisational service development with due consideration of the Trust vision, aims and operational framework.
- Responsibility with freedom to act and cover for Head of Estates and Facilities including Chairing Divisional Board and representing at Trust Operations Group, along with broader operational policy development across the Trust developing services aligned to National Cleaning Standards and guiding wider human resources, health and organisational policies.
- Responsibility for policy implementation including communication, consultation and implementation relating to Site Services, such as cleaning schedule matrices which contribute to the Directorate service development.
- Ensure compliance with relevant legislation, regulations, codes of practice, technical guidance developing policies, ensuring implementation of the relevant controls and that evidence is available for all facets.
- Manage documentation in line with the Trust policy and follow operational policies and procedures related to the storage, retention of records and regarding evidence files for internal and external assurance bodies.
- Contribute towards the Estates and Facilities business management including improvement planning.
- Ensure that robust service key performance measures are developed subject to regular and positive monitoring to reinforce service levels and to bring defective services up to a required standard.
- Ensure investigation and analysis is carried out to investigate alerts, complaints, incidents, and comments; reviewing past records to ensure that any resolutions embrace root causes, improve controls and ensure responsibilities are in place for accountability of a service. Contribute to the development across all functions of a no blame culture that ensures we learn and develop as a team from any incidents and complaints.
- Ensure site services are provided in environments which keep patients, staff and visitors safe by having systems to ensure that the prevention, segregation, handling, transport and disposal of waste is properly managed to minimise the risks to health and safety.
- Maintain records of all related incidents, complaints, alerts, reviewing trends and providing reports for the technical manager for Soft Estates & Facilities and the Head of Estates & Facilities.
- Cover every aspect of the service in event of major incident or emergency scenario.
- Ensure that patient, visitor and staff environment, with respect to legislation, complies with the requirements under the Health and Safety Regulations ensuring risks are minimized for areas of responsibility.
- Take reasonable care for the Health and Safety of yourself and other persons who may be affected by acts and omissions at work and ensure that statutory and departmental safety regulations are adhered to including following the no smoking policy at the Trust.
- Resource and staff management including recruitment, training, appraisal, grievances, disciplinaries, annual leave coordination along with personal development reviews (PDR) and individuals’ performance and human resources management.
- Responsibility for Human resources for the Site Services Sub-Division of the Estates and Facilities Directorate and on a wider scale with pan Directorate responsibilities to cover nominated periods for other Sub-Divisions and business operations, along backfill role of Head of Estates and Facilities, if required.
- Provide training with respect to related specialist processes and controls including software packages as appropriate to related staff and others where appropriate.
- Continually Professionally Develop and be aware of any changes and upgrade the training required via professional links.
- Responsible for ensuring all management and staff within several areas of responsibility across the full division e.g., Domestics, Deep Clean & Waste Management are trained to appropriate standards and maintain training standards to maximize departmental performance.
- Take responsibility and coordination of response to Staff survey results and formulate action plan.
- Ensure supervisors manage attendance, discipline and satisfactory time keeping and conduct, taking appropriate action in line with Trust policies.
- Promote and distill a positive culture and behaviour with co-operation and versatility between supervisors, staff and contractors and develop and support any Managing Change across the function.
- Formalise and aim to continuously improve an agreed system of monitoring staff to ensure acceptable standards of productivity and quality of service delivery
- Convey and debrief managers and staff (in large groups when required) on all matters including unwelcome news and where targets and levels of performance are not being attained.
- Ensure controls are in accordance with the Trust’s Equal Opportunities policy, whilst promoting equality, diversity and inclusivity.
- Responsible for the timely procurement of goods, services and consumables.
- Procure resources, equipment materials and services ensuring compliance with Trust standing orders & standard financial instructions including authorising and approving orders, invoices and payments in line with trust policy.
- Budget holder for several areas of responsibility e.g., Domestics, Deep Clean & Waste Management, applying budgetary controls in line with the above procedures and controls; this will include negotiating and agreeing budgets, ensuring they are adequate to deliver agreed services and regularly monitored. Apply controlled action in adequate time where slippage is anticipated or seen to occur.
