Job Introduction

PROGRAMME PARTNERSHIPS:

A new, rapidly growing division at BBC Studios. We make award-winning series for BBC.com audiences, using BBC’s storytelling heritage to tackle the issues shaping society by giving a voice to organisations leading change. Through unique research and insight we create original commercial content for global brands that tells compelling stories to BBC.com audiences and beyond, delivering formidable results.

SERIES DEVELOPMENT:

Every series we produce begins with the Series Development team. As a Series Developer, you’ll be the team’s knowledge centre about a given topic: learning what BBC.com audiences care about, devising a thematic agenda for a series, and prospecting stories and partners that contribute to its creative and commercial objectives. Your ideas, and ability to execute on them, will define the engaging and far-reaching series that we create.

Excellent research and communication skills are essential, and we’re looking for someone who has proven their ability in a high-calibre, dynamic environment - but we value the diversity of strengths and ideas that come from a team of varied backgrounds. If you can demonstrate a mindset that’s both creative and commercial, and are seeking a fast-paced role in an overachieving team, please apply.

Main Responsibilities

Research and Creative

  • Research industries and issues in significant depth, and map out market dynamics. (Recent subjects include biotechnology, urban mobility and sustainable food systems)
  • Identify and interview industry experts, business leaders and journalists, integrating insights into your research. Convene and chair roundtable discussions with experts.
  • Devise themes, narratives, scope and creative structure for each series, consulting with the production, compliance and marketing teams. Produce written reports, lead presentations, and generate storyboards that convey these ideas.
  • Understand BBC.com audience interests and responses by analysing existing site data and running own surveys and research studies.

Business Development

  • Work with main industry partner to inspire interest in the series within the sector, responding to and qualifying interested parties
  • Identify prospective partners for series, defining and applying creative and commercial criteria to ensure each aligns with established objectives.
  • Proactively contact leaders at prospective partner organisations and track progress. Set and achieve KPIs for prospecting and partner outreach in line with tight schedule.
  • Write comprehensive and concise story briefings for partnerships and production teams

Other

  • Research and pitch new verticals for the team to explore, identifying opportunities for new series partnerships or alternative revenue streams
  • Assist production team in identifying contributors and narratives for films
  • Contribute to cross-team strategy and transformation projects
  • Build connections with and learn from other BBC editorial and commercial teams
Are you the right candidate?

  • Good university degree or equivalent business experience
  • Experience in a research, editorial or business development capacity (preferred)
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication, with the ability to digest complex topics and convey them clearly and concisely
  • Confident speaking with and presenting to business leaders, subject matter experts and other external stakeholders
  • Motivated to set, achieve and exceed KPIs for prospecting and outreach.
  • Creative vision, with a clear sense of what stories work well on film and engage audiences.
  • Capable of working effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team, including producers, compliance officers, partner managers, etc.
  • Entrepreneurial attitude: interested and able to challenge assumptions about how the team works, identify areas for improvement, and implement solutions
  • Able to think commercially and critically, making shrewd assessments as to the motivation and capacity of prospective partners
  • Great time management and initiative, able to manage multiple projects concurrently and work in a fast-paced environment
  • Proficiency with Excel and PowerPoint, and proven ability to engage with new software
  • Data analysis experience is an advantage.
