Job description
Working for Technical Services and located within the Reading School of Art, you will be responsible for providing support to students and staff in their practical work, specifically in the area of 2D Art, working in printmaking processes such as screen printing and lino printing.
Additionally support is required for the department’s forthcoming move to a new building, so the successful applicant would be expecting to heavily contribute to the establishment of new facilities and the systems required to run these facilities safely and effectively.
This is an exciting opportunity to work with students and staff, as they develop ideas and plans for projects and develop their artistic skills. You will provide practical guidance and advice on how best to approach and produce 2D practical artwork, including techniques, use of equipment, and safety considerations. This will include running group workshops, as well as providing individual support and guidance. The applicant will be expected to supervise and guide other technical staff not at the senior grade, whose specialisms may be in other disciplines and media.
The successful candidate will have an extensive background in practical art work, and experience working in education, preferably higher education. As part of the role, you will work closely with School staff and technical colleagues to plan projects, support teaching and research activities, and assess the resources required to achieve objectives, also supporting other activities where there is crossover of skills. You will also work closely with students to help them achieve their learning objectives.
Additional skills in associated areas, 3D and multimedia art would be advantageous.
You will also be expected to develop positive and collaborative working relationships with colleagues in all areas of the University and to conduct yourself as a professional at all times. You will share your skills with other members of technical staff and contribute, for instance, towards our aims of ensuring a good level of practical skill across the whole team.
You will have:
- A background in 2D art, including printmaking
- Skill level equivalent to HND, NVQ4, degree, or significant relevant experience.
- Significant experience of printmaking and other artistic techniques.
- A knowledge of the risks associated with practical art and printmaking, and the systems used for managing these risks
- The ability to work independently or under direct supervision, to lead and influence others, to deliver results against deadlines and devise innovative and creative solutions to solve complex problems.
- A passion for working with young artists to support them in bringing their ideas to life
Please note this role is a part-time, fixed-term post for 29 hours, 36 weeks of the year.
