The responsibilities for the Department for Energy Security & Net Zero for 2023 are as follows:

  • Delivering security of energy supply
  • Ensuring properly functioning energy markets
  • Encouraging greater energy efficiency
  • Seizing the opportunities of net zero to lead the world in new green industries

For 2023, our priorities are:

  • Ensure security of energy supply this winter, next winter and in the longer-term – bringing down energy bills and reducing inflation.
  • Ensure the UK is on track to meet its legally binding Net Zero commitments and support economic growth by significantly speeding up delivery of network infrastructure and domestic energy production.
  • Improve the energy efficiency of UK homes, businesses and public sector buildings to meet the 15% demand reduction ambition.
  • Deliver current schemes to support energy consumers with their bills and develop options for long-term reform to improve how the electricity market works for families and businesses.
  • Seize the economic benefits of Net Zero, including the jobs and growth created through investment in new green industries.
  • Pass the Energy Bill to support the emerging CCUS and hydrogen sectors; to update the governance of the energy system; and to reduce the time taken to consent offshore wind.

Job description

We're looking for a social media and digital channels expert to join our growing team in one of Whitehall's busiest government departments.

This is an exciting, varied role where you will use creative communications ideas and strategic thinking to tell interesting and important stories, from helping people with their energy bills to ensuring the UK has a secure energy supply.

You will join a supportive, encouraging team of digital experts, helping us on our mission to help citizens, support the UK’s energy policy goals, and deliver the best digital communications in government.

Person specification

In your role, you will:

  • Develop and deliver integrated digital communications plans. You will lead these plans from concept to delivery, often working on multiple projects at a time.

  • Develop both long-term organic campaigns plans urgent and handle urgent reactive social media issues.

  • Manage 1 to 2 junior members of the team, leading and developing their work and experience.

  • Keep up to date with digital developments and social media, analysing audiences and helping the team develop and deliver a dedicated approach for each platform.

  • Work closely with our creative team and producer colleagues to commission creative multimedia content.

  • Write excellent and engaging social copy and act as quality control for junior members of the team.

  • Increase audience engagement with your plans through building stakeholder relationships, online outreach and engagement. You will evaluate performance and generate insights for the team.

  • Monitor online conversations to spot emerging trends and engagement opportunities. You will also get involved in our work to continuously experiment with and adopt new tools and approaches to better reach our audiences.

Note that you may be required to undertake occasional out of hours/weekend working.

Skills and Experience

We'd love to hear from you if you have:

  • Social media management experience and a passion for digital.
  • Experience of delivering digital communications in a public facing role.
  • Strong project management skills, with ability to work flexibly on multiple tasks.
  • Line management experience, planning and prioritising your team's work, ensuring output is consistently to a high standard.
  • Confidence to communicate persuasively with colleagues at all levels.
  • Evidence of strong copywriting for websites and social media.
  • Experience working with creative colleagues and briefing social content (graphics, animations, videos)
  • Experience in evaluating communications activities using online analytics.
  • A keen curiosity about digital trends and innovation.
