The continued growth of our Precision Guidance Business Area (BA) offers an exciting opportunity for Mechanical Engineers to join this part of the Integrated Sensing and Protection (ISP) Line of Business, Leonardo Electronics UK.

We are seeking a high calibre Mechanical Engineer, with proven experience in all aspects of the Engineering Life-cycle.
Within this BA, the projects range from low Technology Readiness Level (TRL) research tasks through to in-service systems being delivered to our partners in the UK and beyond. Our established position as the leading precision guidance specialists in the UK continues to provide opportunities for new developments for the next generation of missile systems and beyond.

The Precision Guidance BA forecasts continued growth over the next 5 years as part of the Integrated Business Plan. As such, there is a requirement to further develop the high performance culture to realise the growth potential that exists.

Much of the work within Precision Guidance BA is at secret level and therefore required regular attendance at our Basildon facility. Options exist for hybrid working when security classification allow.

As a key member of the integrated Engineering Team this role represents an opportunity to take responsibility for a diverse range of technologies, with opportunities to innovate in this high technology domain.

You will positively effect on the solutions we deliver, working directly with our customers and end-users as part of a Platform Integration and End User Steering Groups.

All members of the Mechanical Engineering Team are encouraged to continually develop their technical skills within design, structural & thermal analyses and model driven engineering aspects of Mechanical Engineering.

What you will do


  • Support the Precision Guidance (PG) IPT in the delivery of technical solutions on critical Business programmes, ensuring Mechanical Engineering excellence.
  • Compliance of Mechanical Engineering solutions through the entire Engineering Lifecycle, ensuring that the solutions consider all requirements including product quality, safety, reliability, testability, sustainability, etc.
  • Management and delivery of Mechanical Requirements Specification.
  • Mechanical Engineering detailed design; including numerical calculations, tolerance studies, etc.
  • Produce Manufacturing Data Packs in line with BS8888, including appropriate use of GD&T.
  • Support successful resolution of technical problem investigations.
  • Contribute to reviews of mechanical designs in accordance with business and industry standards.
  • Hands on involvement in practical implementation of development builds and Design of Experiments.
  • Provide support to Procurement and Manufacturing during the introduction of new product into the Development/Production lifecycle phase.
  • Actively manage Work Package delivery elements to achieve desired Quality, Schedule and Cost.
  • Build effective cross-functional relationships within local site, across business.

What we are looking for


Qualifications/Experience:

  • A minimum of an upper second class degree in Mechanical Engineering (or similar), or
  • Equivalent experience in the field of Defence, Airborne or naval environments.

Experience in:

  • Mechanical Engineering for Electronic and/or EO products
    Design of systems for ‘harsh environments’ i.e. Shock, Vibration, Temperature, EMC, Salt fog, etc.
  • Mechanical design and development using 3D CAD tools (ideally PTC Creo).
  • Problem solving using a structured, logical approach to investigate issues and problems in an effective manner.
  • Understanding Structural and Thermal Analyses data, to inform design decisions.
  • Experienced in various aspects of DfX, including Manufacturing, Assembly, Test, Integration and Sustainability.
  • Operating in a high performing multi-disciplinary Team.

Desirable:

  • MEng in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Experience within the IR spectrum for EO Systems
  • Airborne Products
  • Model Based Design methods and tools (i.e. Mathworks)
  • Capable of producing ‘first pass’ (structural and thermal) analyses to determine if a design is fit-for-purpose i.e. using PTC Simulate, flow or similar.
  • Mechanical Engineering industry trends - knowledge of new and advancing tools, techniques and technologies.
