Floating Structures Senior Naval Architect
This job advert is for the role of a Naval Architect/Senior Naval Architect working in the Marine & Offshore Structures team as part of the UK & Ireland Technical Support Office. The successful candidate would be principally based at the LR Aberdeen Office or Southampton United Kingdom. Dependant on individual circumstances, consideration may be given to alternative working locations.
We would welcome applications from recent graduates as well as more experienced persons. Job grade assigned will depend on experience. As part of a small and dedicated team, you will be principally working on wide range of offshore structures projects, including new-building, life extension and approval of existing asset modifications. Your work will involve supporting our local and global clients and surveyors by undertaking design appraisal and support; and answering a wide range of complex technical queries. The job offers the opportunity to work on all types of floating offshore assets including ship shaped, semi-submersibles, jack ups etc.

Your duties will include:
- Working as senior member of the Marine & Offshore Structures team carrying out design appraisal and consultancy against LR Rules and Regulations for the Classification of Offshore Units. You will be principally working with offshore assets but there will be opportunities to be involved with ship Rule projects dependent on experience and in line with business needs.
- In undertaking your technical role, you will be required to take the lead in assessing complex structural problems through direct calculations and application of LR’s Rules and Regulations & other International standards and codes.
- Mentoring, coaching and developing other employees, as appropriate, to achieve effective knowledge transfer and application.
- Providing specialist technical advice to internal and external clients globally at a senior level, which will include designers, shipyards and other LR surveyors and specialists.
- Contributing to Rule Development Projects and Proposals to ensure our Rules remain up to date and in line with the latest industry innovations.
- Contribute to the bid and win processes for new projects by accurately estimating time requirements and developing scopes of work.
- Produce the required deliverables within agreed broad parameters in an appropriate format and review other employee’s work where requested.

- The above job description does not preclude the assignment of other duties by the Technical Manager of Ship Structures Department or the line manager.
Technical / Professional Qualifications / Requirements:
- The candidate should have a degree in naval architect, structural engineering, mechanical engineering or equivalent from a tertiary organisation recognised by Lloyd’s Register.
- Experience of ship structural design and the application of Class Rules and Regulations of Offshore Units. Experience in application of Submersibles and Class Rules to ships is advantageous.
- Membership of an appropriate professional institution.
- Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status or working towards it.
- Proficiency in the English Language (written and oral) commensurate with the work and an ability to write detailed technical reports and design appraisal documents.
- It is preferable that the individual should have an understanding of the responsibilities of a Classification Society, and the interface between Class Rules and Statutory Regulations.
