We are an organisation of 2,000 employees in the UK, headquartered in London, in a brand-new office designed with sustainability, ‘conviviality’ and collaboration in mind. We also have offices in Scotland and various distilleries and production sites across the UK from Plymouth to London to Speyside.
Your new team
This position sits in our Chivas Brothers business. At Chivas Brothers, our 1,600-strong team across 27 sites is committed to upholding the heritage of Scotch and ensuring its sustainable future, as well as opening it up to new audiences across the globe.
You will be part of a 5 strong team dedicated to influencing UK and Scottish government policy in way that helps our three UK businesses to grow. Reporting to the Director Public Affairs you will develop and implement our strategy for UK trade, working alongside two other senior managers leading on UK government and Scottish government engagement respectively, supported by the public affairs assistant. The team is part of integrated public affairs effort which delivers for the CEOs of all three UK-based businesses and aligns to a global Public Affairs effort led by the Vice-President for Global Public Affairs in Paris. Two team members are based in Scotland, and we are committed to flexible and agile working, and to Chivas values of Open, Bold, and United.
Your unique contribution
You will have 3 main areas of responsibility:
Lead the development and implementation of the international trade strategies for Pernod Ricard’s three UK- based businesses.
- Identify policy risks/opportunities and realistic campaign objectives on issues such as tariff and non-tariff trade barriers, EU Exit and FTAs.
- Develop supporting tools including campaign plans, speaking points, briefing notes, presentations, and media strategies
- Ensure timely internal reporting and effective coordination to and with HQ, market companies, other brand companies and regions.
- Manage the international trade budget and ensure value for money from Pernod Ricard’s memberships and activities
- Engage and manage additional support as required
- Work closely with the Communications team when internal and external communication is required regarding international trade issues.
Promote Pernod Ricard as a leading authority on international trade by developing and maintaining strong working relationships with key internal and external shareholders.
- Together with the Director of Public Affairs, represent PRUK, CBL and GTR at meetings with Westminster Special Advisors, MPs, and Ministers, as well as their counterparts in the devolved administrations. Represent PRUK, CBL and GTR with representatives of foreign governments or trade associations either based in or visiting the UK.
- Work across Pernod Ricard’s three UK based entities to ascertain their trade challenges and to help them to respond effectively
- Lead engagement on trade issues with market companies, other brand companies and Pernod Ricard HQ
- Represent PRUK, CBL and GTR at trade body and industry meetings, and collaborate with the wider industry as required to develop effective campaigns.
- This includes managing the day-to-day activity and relationships with all trade associations on trade issues
- Manage relationships with external contractors, including trade and economic consultancies on trade issues
Monitor and report on UK & overseas trade policy developments.
- Develop & implement effective systems to monitor & report on trade policy developments in UK which may affect Pernod Ricard’ s exports and imports from/to the UK
- Brief and advise the three CEOs of the UK based businesses & their senior management teams on trade related issues as appropriate
- Brief UK stakeholders, Pernod Ricard HQ, and markets as appropriate on political, policy and regulatory developments affecting our interests & prepare presentations when required
Who you’ll be working with
Internally, you’ll work with operations teams responsible for CBL’s exports in Scotland and with public affairs team across the globe, co-ordinating closely with our global trade team in Brussels, to ensure that trade flows deliver for our business. You’ll report to the Director for Public Affairs and be accountable to the CEO of our UK production subsidiary CBL, who sees trade, along with climate, as a priority for industry leadership.
Externally, your primary contacts will be UK Ministers, MPs, and officials with an interest in trade, with regular contact with foreign governments and trade associations either represented in, or visiting, the UK. You will work closely with trade associations as part of your efforts to multiply Pernod Ricard’s impact and align with others in the sector. You will need to build good working relations with your commercial peers, within the confines of competition laws.
Your blend of talent
This position could be right for you if you:
- You have a background in trade policy, including significant experience in a trade association, private company, or government.
- You have strong written and oral communication skills, are a sure-footed self-starter and dedicated team player, with a commitment to delivering results and learning new ways of doing things
- You have direct experience of the sector and/or wider specialist knowledge such as experience of climate as it affects trade policy or ESG issues.
- You can identify commercial implications and outcomes within government trade policy to secure concrete results for a consumer facing business.
