Full Time Watford, East of England, England 42200 - 167000 GBP ANNUAL Today
Job description

We are looking for a Senior Legal Counsel to join our team. You'll be responsible for being the lead lawyer advising on all procurement and commercial contracting across the organisation.
We’re now excited to start a new chapter of our success story. Allwyn has been selected by the Gambling Commission as the Preferred Applicant to be the operator of the National Lottery for the Fourth Licence, starting on 1 February 2024.
We have an ambitious vision for the UK’s National Lottery. Over the next two years we’ll be building a team of experts to deliver a fresh look and feel for the lottery, to drive growth, and to create a better society. This fast-paced, delivery-focused project team will be made up of talented people from a variety of disciplines and best-in-class partner organisations to prepare for the scale of this transformation, supported by experienced colleagues at Allwyn UK.
At the heart of our strategy is people. Through shared values, expertise, and commitment, we will create change, and build a better world.
We can’t wait to get started on this journey and really power change for the greater good.
You’ll be responsible for:

  • Providing clear strategic legal advice to the Procurement team and/or the relevant business teams on procurement and tender processes and all commercial arrangements and negotiations.
  • Negotiating (together with the Procurement team and/or business area) and drafting the terms of all commercial contracts, including goods and services, retail, IT, payment processing and IP.
  • Advising on Allwyn’s internal contractual governance processes (including procurement policy document/s and related procedures) and assisting with legal updates.
  • Managing due diligence of existing Camelot contracts and advising on the transfer benefit of those contracts to Allwyn from Camelot and its relevant sub-contractors required for the Fourth National Lottery Licence.
  • Advising on any procurement or contractual disputes and managing junior contract lawyers on the Legal team
  • Instructing and managing external legal counsel where specialist advice is required, including any commercial due diligence team required to review the contracts.

What we are looking for:

  • Qualified solicitor with a current practising certificate, ideally with a minimum of 7 PQE (although other experience levels will be considered on merit).
  • Excellent in-house experience or secondment also strongly preferable, having trained with a leading law firm.
  • Experience in the gaming or gambling sectors preferable, although not essential and in another regulated environment or sector, and/or dealing with public sector stakeholders, would also be useful, although not essential.
  • Strong procurement and commercial contracts experience (both advising on the procurement process and negotiating and drafting contracts), ideally including general commercial (goods and services), retail, payment processing, technology (including information technology) and intellectual property.
  • A commercial and constructive approach to solving problems and the ability to provide legally sound risk-based advice.
  • Ability to communicate and build relationships effectively with people at all levels (including senior management and Board), both internally and externally.

Our Benefits:

  • 20% Transition Bonus payable at the end of the transition phase subject to scheme rules
  • 33 days paid leave. (Includes Bank Holidays)
  • 4x Life Insurance
  • 4.5% Pension
  • Single Private Health cover
  • 25 Days Annual Leave (plus Bank Holidays)
  • £500 Annual Wellness Allowance
  • £100 Annual Working from Home Allowance – to help support increased domestic costs of working from home

Making a Difference:
Our goal is to create one of the UK’s most inclusive organisations – where people can bring the best of themselves, to do their best work, every day, for the benefit of good causes.
While the main contribution of the National Lottery to society is through the funds to good causes, at Allwyn we put our purpose and values at the heart of everything we do.
That’s why we have committed to an ambitious Social Value strategy, which is woven into the way we do business. We believe that lotteries must serve everyone, not just those who play. So, whether as an employee, a supplier, a retailer or any of the stakeholders that we interact with, we will be powering good across the UK.
