Job summary

bp has been an International Oil Company for over a century, now we are changing direction to become an Integrated Energy Company - from IOC to IEC - from a company driven by the production of resources to one that that’s focused on delivering energy solutions for customers. Our new strategy provides a comprehensive and coherent approach to turn our net zero ambition into action. This coming decade is critical for the world in the fight against climate change, and to drive the necessary change in global energy systems will require action from everyone.

In the years ahead, bp is going to significantly scale-up our low-carbon energy business and this project is a fundamental part of BP’s strategy to increase our presence in low carbon energy, hydrogen and carbon capture businesses to serve communities on Teesside and Humberside that are ready to be at the leading edge of the energy transition. The Net Zero Teeside/Northern Endurance Partnership (NZT/NEP) project is a Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) project aiming to develop a network that enables the decarbonization of a cluster of carbon intensive businesses on Teesside and Humberside by 2030. This will be the UK’s first commercial scale, full chain CCS project, and has the potential to capture up to 10 million tonnes (Mt) of carbon dioxide emissions per annum – making a significant contribution towards the UK reaching its net zero greenhouse gas emissions target by 2050.

The project comprises a number of elements, including a new gas-fired power station on Teesside, with state-of-the art carbon capture technology, an onshore and offshore pipeline system and subsea CO2 injection infrastructure. CO₂ from the power station, as well as from a cluster of local industries on Teesside and Humberside (including hydrogen production), will be captured through a common CO₂ pipeline network, compressed, and transported offshore for secure storage at the Endurance saline aquifer. The project is reaching the end of the design stage and plans to be operational by 2026/27.

As a Senior Environmental & Social Advisor you will take care of the primary E&S roles on the project with the accountabilities described below. The role is part of an HSSE team dedicated to ensuring the project is delivered safely and in full compliance with the developing regulatory regime. There are a number of aspects to the NZT/NEP project that are “first of a kind” (FOAK) and will need a thoughtful approach to the collaborate with the Regulators.

This role will focus on the onshore aspects on Teesside and a track record of working effectively and thoughtfully with UK environmental regulators such as the Environment Agency and Natural England will be required. • One of the key accountabilities of the role will be the negotiation and agreement of the Environmental Permits for operating the NZT power station site. • You will represent bp and partners to UK onshore Regulators against the backdrop of a FOAK project.
  • Experience of the Environmental Permitting regime and working closely with the Environment Agency will be essential.
  • Responsible for implementation of Regulatory Compliance, Environmental & Social systems, processes and activities in service of safe, compliant and reliable BP and contractor activities on Teesside.
