Job description
Main purpose of the job:
To provide an efficient and effective Security service across all campuses of the University and any other buildings or site from time to time used or occupied by the University or any of its constituent Colleges.
Main duties and responsibilities:
1. Staff the security control room and operate all the functions, to agreed levels, within it including CCTV, alarm and telephonic and radio systems, as well as the distribution of keys, recording details in the logbook as appropriate.
2. Checking of IDs of all visitors who arrive on site as appropriate.
3. Locking and unlocking buildings and premises as designated.
4. Patrolling the site(s); including in the evening and night.
5. Providing an initial first aid service for the sites.
6. Acting as the first response officer in the event of a fire and intruder alarms being activated.
7. The duties to be performed may vary from site to site, but the officer will be expected to follow the standing orders for the site which they are carrying out their duties.
8. Completing incident, accident and patrol reports.
9. Monitoring student behaviour and aiming to keep noise to a reasonable level.
10. Undertake single person internal and external patrolling on foot or using vehicular means, detecting, evaluating and remedying risks to safety of persons and security of buildings and carrying out car parking duties as required. Hi-visibility uniform will be worn at all times.
11. Attend and pro-actively deal with any security-related incident, acting on own initiative or as directed by the control room operator, supervisor or other member of facilities management staff.
12. Open and secure buildings in line with the University’s needs and requirements.
13. Record all incidents in the appropriate format and write concise and accurate incident reports as necessary. In the absence of the Head of Security to take charge of any incident and reporting back to the Head of Security or his nominated deputy.
14. Operate security-related and personal protective equipment following departmental procedures; ensuring the equipment is clean and stored correctly, reporting any faults to the supervisor.
15. Deal professionally with victims of crime and individuals in confrontational situations. It is expected that individuals committing crimes at the University will be observed, detained or arrested at the officer’s discretion awaiting the arrival of the Police.
16. Undertake staff training as required and receive guidance and instruction from the supervisor when necessary. Help train new members of patrol staff in working at Security Services.
17. The University’s Head of Security, his deputy or the principal of the college at which the officer is based, may require such other duties consistent with the security service.
