ROLE POSITIONING AND OBJECTIVES


What are the key objectives and expectations from this role?

The purpose of the role is to direct and deliver toxicological ingredient and material evaluations in accordance with guidelines from the Product Stewardship Council (PSC) in line with the R&D Policy Framework, Corporate Positions and specific legislation for our product categories. To be an integral member of the team delivering innovations to market.

WHAT YOU WILL BE ACCOUNTABLE FOR

  • To recommend and guide the project teams on the toxicology evaluations, tests and design needed to build the data packages for the individual product launches
  • Project management of the delivery of the toxicological data for risk assessment purposes, including conducting quantitative risk assessments, and risk profiling for application in formal project management. Authors and delivers GR&D reports and presentations when necessary
  • Responsible to articulate and drive defined program areas or tools that can deliver a common approach between categories that will aid the efficiency and treatment of different ingredient types or methods e.g. Naturals, Skin Sensitizers etc.
  • Identify and suggest where new approaches can be applied and suggest changes to operating and stakeholder management procedures for subsequent approval
  • Apply appropriate solutions or approaches to identify and resolve problems based on an understanding and experience of biology, toxicology, or chemistry
  • Budget – inform forecast, manage project budgets, and adhere to financial process and controls.

ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE, SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

  • Relevant science background equivalent to a degree level qualification with good understanding of the principles of Toxicology. Ideally demonstrated technical background in toxicology test packages, particularly risk assessment
  • Awareness of technical developments in toxicology & regulations (tobacco & consumer goods)
  • Demonstrable a positive attitude along with a drive to succeed and flexibility in adapting to new tasks and changing priorities
  • Proficient computing skills to facilitate use of in-house database and skilled user of Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
  • Understanding of product regulations in tobacco or cosmetics, consumer goods, food, food packaging, pharmaceuticals, etc.), with basic knowledge of the contents and design of conventional tobacco and nicotine products
  • Previous experience in some aspect of applied science, risk assessment, or product stewardship
  • Good attention to detail with a keen problem-solving attitude to enable the delivery of thorough and robust risk assessments
  • Awareness of tobacco product emissions chemistry (e.g. T/N/CO deliveries, TobReg9, Hoffmann analysis, smoking regimes)
  • Good communication, organisational, and planning skills, and ability work both as a team member and independently
  • May be a member of a relevant professional body, such as the British Toxicology Society
  • Relevant science background equivalent to a degree level qualification
  • MSc in Toxicology (or another relevant subject) advantageous but not essential.
