Enable Futures are operating as an employment business on behalf of its client and recruiting for a Mechatronics / Maintenance Engineer working in Ilminster, Somerset. Join a market leading photonics engineering and manufacturing solutions company. Our client supplies within industry, telecoms, aerospace, defense, space and life sciences! As a Mechatronics Engineer, you will be responsible for applying principles of engineering and manufacturing technology to the production process in order to ensure high levels of productivity are maintained on all the production lines. You will also ensure that the manufacturing process operates as smoothly as possible, reducing costly inefficiencies to a minimum whilst maintaining the integrity and safety of the plant (Facilities and manufacturing) as a whole.
ABOUT YOU: ONC / HNC in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or be qualified by experience.
ABOUT YOU: Hold a Health and Safety qualification (NEBOSH or equivalent), Portable appliance testing EAL qualification and BS7671 18th Edition Wiring Regs EAL qualifications.
ABOUT YOU: It is essential you have experience in PLC / CNC machinery maintenance. Our client use a variety including Siemens, Bosch, Heidenhain, Fanuc Mitsubishi and Allen Bradley.
The current team: In the maintenance department currently there is a mechanically biased engineer, and an electrical engineer, as it’s a small team you will be required to covering all areas!
Outstanding Package:
- The working hours are on a shift pattern 1 week on early shift (7.00am - 3.30pm) and the next week late shift (1.00pm- 9.30pm) with an earlier Friday finish, working Monday to Friday. This rota continues with one week earlier and one week lates ongoing.

Key Responsibilities:
- Maintain process productivity to the KPI of the business
- Diagnose Mechanical and Electrical breakdown, assessing the best course of action and conducting a performance repair. Ensuring that any rectification is followed through to a satisfactory conclusion by effective communication with other members of the Engineering team.
- Be a problem solving leader, get to true breakdown root cause, implement corrective actions, implement control and mistake proof solutions to avoid repeat breakdown all together.
- Monitor all machines and ancillary plant during production (whilst maintaining notes and relevant log sheets and TPM system).
- Follow preventative maintenance and liaise with Engineering Manager regarding spare parts requirements.
- Assist with installation work and give assistance to contractors, as and when required, ensuring that site standards are adhered to at all times.
- Carry out any repair or maintenance work that is required, whilst ensuring the area or workshop is left in a clean and safe condition.
- Constantly finding ways to increase efficiency and effectiveness of repairs through modern lean thinking and techniques.
- Assist the Engineering planner to develop Job Libraries and how to codify repairs.
- Assist the Engineering planner to develop a preventive maintenance plan for all key equipment.
- Shift basic maintenance and equipment upkeep to line operators. Help operators create and define individual equipment Autonomous Maintenance Plan.
- Assist the Line supervisors to deploy and manage the Autonomous maintenance deployment process.
- Provide a detailed handover to the next shift ensuring all relevant information is passed on and understood.
- Adopt and maintain working practices learnt on training programmes.
- Exploration and investigation of new equipment and processes.
- Project planning, all tooling activities and budgets generating reports to meet the KPI requirements of the Department.
- Present project risks and solutions early within facility updates so allowing the business opportunity to respond.
- Conduct / support Health and safety audits of the facilities.
- Areas of responsibilities ( Building, HVAC, Grounds, Electrical substation & switch gear @ 11Kv to 450Volts,Site sewage system, Water sampling for contamination monitoring, river level management, Alarm systems ( Fire and Burglar), manufacturing and process equipment.
- Key areas of responsibilities (TPM, PAT, machine moves, day to day scheduling of unforeseen failures, Selection of qualified contractors, contractor controls, working permits ( Hot work and electrical), Asset management, Machine disposal, EMC mapping.
- To train and support new users in the use of the maintenance and facilities software and its tools.
- System administration duties to maintain system reliably, robustness and user security permissions.
- Proactively identify improvements and apply change management.
- Assist IT department with application installs, software and hardware upgrades.
- Upkeep maintenance contracts / budgets and liaise with vendors for technical support.
- Maintain the skill base of the technicians working on site to suit the changes in Production equipment, facilities changes and health and safety updates.
Experience, attributes & skills sought:
· Strong written and verbal communication skills
· Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications
· Experience or knowledge of glass machining and polishing, thin film coating, machining of metals, painting, powder coating, plating and conversion coating.
· Exceptional level of numeracy and literacy
· Strong organisational skills
· Ability to create and work within automated maintenance schedule
· Ability to troubleshoot, root cause analysis
· Knowledge of structure or grounds to be maintained
· Knowledge and ability to generate maintenance procedures
· Knowledge of systems to be maintained (e.g. Electrical, roofing)
· Manual dexterity
· Attention to detail and understanding of the business environment
· Ability / robustness to self-prioritise work packages to meet legislative requirements and manufacturing schedules
· Experience in maintenance is required
