Job summary
As the UK’s regulator for the energy industry, Ofgem works on behalf of energy consumers to ensure that every household and business in the UK can rely on a safe energy supply.
Within the role of Risk and Assurance Officer, you’ll be responsible for identifying emerging risks, and ensuring the ongoing schemes run by Ofgem are delivered effectively, in line with all necessary requirements and codes, and supporting the wider team in the delivery of crucial programmes and activities. You will be working across the Delivery and Schemes Directorate, for the development and delivery of the directorate’s Risk and Assurance Frameworks, acting as a point of contact for team enquiries.
You’ll be required to manage routine risk and assurance activities, identifying and escalating problems where necessary, and reporting against the Internal Assurance actions tracker.
You should be able to review, scrutinise and challenge processes and documents such as operating procedures and guidance documents.

Job description
Ofgem administers a range of environmental and social programmes on behalf of Government. Ensuring participants or obligated suppliers on these schemes comply with the relevant requirements is essential to maintain scheme integrity and provide value for money.
Working within the Delivery & Schemes Directorate’s Strategy & Business Operations Portfolio, the Risk & Assurance Team plan and deliver a wide range of risk management and assurance activities across the directorate’s second line of defence, providing the Director of Delivery & Schemes and the Gas and Electricity Markets Authority with assurance that the schemes Ofgem administers are being delivered effectively, efficiently and in line with legislative requirements and the civil service code.
The Risk and Assurance Officer will support the team’s Managers and the Senior Risk and Assurance Manager in the delivery and continuous improvement of our existing programme of risk and assurance activities and, also, in the development of new controls to manage emerging risks as they are identified.
Key outputs and deliverables
- Work with the Risk and Assurance Team and our stakeholders to support the development and delivery of the directorate’s Risk and Assurance Frameworks.
- Effectively manage routine risk and assurance activities and escalate problems where necessary.
- Maintain and report against the Internal Assurance actions tracker, working with action owners to ensure timely completion of recommendations.
- Update risk and assurance plans and trackers to enable the provision of accurate reporting data.
- Contribute to the delivery of risk and assurance projects and other team objectives.
- Monitor the Risk & Assurance Team’s shared inbox and act as a point of contact for team enquiries.
Person specification
- Excellent numerical and analytical skills, with a strong attention to detail and good problem solving skills (LEAD)
- Ability to review, provide scrutiny and challenge of processes and documents such as operating procedures and guidance documents created by other teams
- Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate professionally and effectively with colleagues and stakeholders at all levels
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work well within and across teams and build and maintain effective relationships
- Excellent organisational skills with the ability to proactively prioritise, plan and schedule complex tasks
