A little bit about us: Hull University Students’ Union is a Charity, with a large trading subsidiary; our primary purposes are:
- Advancement of education, promoting the interests and welfare of students during study and representing, supporting and advising students.
- Being the recognised representative channel between students and the University of Hull and other representative bodies.
- Providing social, cultural sporting, recreational activities, and forums for discussions and debate for the personal development of its students.
Our Trading Subsidiary provides a range of services for students including, a Supermarket, a pub, a nightclub, coffee and food outlets.

General duties and responsibilities
- To deliver exceptional customer service at all times.
- To ensure that all store merchandising standards and cleanliness are of the highest standard and that the store is suitable replenished prior to the end of your working shift.
- To work within the shop and stock room areas assisting with deliveries and stock shop floor replenishment ensuring that stock rotation and store merchandising standards are adhered to.
- To work on the cashier assisted and self-service till areas ensuring that all cash handling procedures are completed as per the store standards and that any discrepancies are reported to the Commercial Operations Manager or his/her deputies.
- To deal with customer queries and complaints in a professional and friendly manner.
- Keep up to date with current promotions and new products ensuring that at every opportunity you are promoting these to our customers.
- To ensure that cleaning standards are of the highest standard and that cleaning rotas and checklists are completed.
- To contribute as a team player to the successful running of the store.
- Maintain a positive atmosphere amongst all staff and customers.
- Ensure confidentiality at all times in the handling and dissemination of information and data, and embedding and implementing GDPR across the workload.
- Carry out all duties in line with SPAR’s and HUSU’s policies and in line with the organisation’s values and strategic aims.
- To ensure that you are operating to all statutory laws relating to Health & Safety, Food Hygiene and age related products are followed at all times.
- To attend compulsory training days and complete all on line training programmes as required.
- Carry out any other reasonable instruction asked by the Retail Management team.
Person Specification
Essential
- Previous experience of working within a fast paced front facing customer service environment.
- Previous experience of cash handling.
- Understanding of a Students Union and the role our Retail shop plays within this environment.
- To be able to demonstrate the ability to work on your own initiative and within a team.
- To be able to demonstrate your ability to have an organised approach in your working methods.
- To be competent in your ability with literacy, numeracy, IT and communication skills.
- To be flexible in your approach to the hours of work which will include working evenings, weekends and bank holidays.
- To be eligible to work in the UK.
Desirable
- Any previous training received in Retail environment.
- To be able to work over Christmas, Easter and summer vacation periods.
- Knowledge of Health and Safety, Food Hygiene, Licensing Law and Age related products within a Retail environment.
