Job Title: Researcher / Principal Researcher (Materials Design & Characterisation)

Salary: £33,000 to £40,000 + Benefits

The Role
We have an exciting research position opportunity based within the Materials Design and Characterisation group in Research and Development at Tata Steel UK, based at our Swansea Technology Centre on campus at Swansea University. We are recruiting for a Researcher with experience in the field of material performance for steel, with specialisms in fatigue, fracture and integrity. You will join an established team of metallurgy based specialists, and will work within multidisciplinary projects to improve products and processes for application of our strip and tube products covering a wide variety of market sectors, e.g. automotive, engineering & industrial, energy & power and packaging.
To be successful, you will have an innovative and practical mind set and will support the development of steel products and technology innovation, including successful implementation on plant, as well as respond to support requests from our production sites and customers. You will quickly grow to become an independent project activity leader in the challenging area of material performance for applications.
As a keen technologist, you will be involved in improving Tata Steel’s portfolio of steel products for our chosen markets. You will collaborate with specialists both internally - across our business and UK R&D sites, based in Swansea and Warwick Universities - and externally. As such, you will work in close cooperation with researchers from various disciplines in an open, international culture with highly motivated colleagues.
The Candidate
You will have proven knowledge and experience of material performance, particularly fracture & fatigue, in a steel context.
To be considered for the opportunity, you will be a qualified Researcher, having preferably obtained a Doctorate degree with a focus on material performance and integrity.
You will have an understanding of metallurgy, thermomechanical processing and characterisation techniques.
Understanding and familiarity with manufacturing processes, markets and applications is desirable.
Additionally you will also require the following skills and capabilities:
- Project leadership and team working skills
- Report writing and presentation skills
- Customer orientated with a great degree of curiosity
- Experience of working in projects requiring material performance analysis
- An analytical approach is an important competency for the job
- Flexibility and perseverance to respond to and complete support requests from our production colleagues
- Demonstrable commitment to health, safety & wellbeing
The role requires you to keep abreast of developing technologies and understand our customer needs with respect to improving product and process performance. In this capacity, you will use your leadership and team working skills to establish and progress key R&D projects aligned with our production site requirements.
