Job description

2151923EB

The Physical Science Data Infrastructure (PSDI) initiative is an EPSRC funded large scale infrastructure project. Our aim is to enable researchers in the physical sciences to handle data more easily by connecting and enhancing the different data infrastructures they use. Through PSDI researchers will be able to:

  • Find and Access reference quality data from commercial and open sources
  • Combine data from different sources
  • Share data, software and models including experimental and simulation data
  • Deploy close-to-data computation and containerisation of data and software
  • Use AI to explore data
  • Make the results of their research open and FAIR

We are looking for an enthusiastic developer to join our team and help formulate and create tools and systems to facilitate this.

To be successful you must have a PhD, equivalent professional qualifications or experience and a background in development practices and excellent communication skills. A talent for technical problem solving is a must. You will encounter a wide range of technologies and data and will be given many opportunities to build new skills. We don't expect you to be proficient in everything, but it is vital that you enjoy exploring new areas and learning new technologies. You will have opportunities to work on several areas within the project, however the primary research and development aspect of the role will be the exploitation of data resources and technologies using APIs.

You will make a valuable contribution to PSDI’s goals, making contributions from software development to user engagement and have the potential to grow your own distinctive area of expertise. There will be many opportunities to develop skills that will advance your career and build on skills outside of software development, such as in project management, training and communication.

The position will be a fixed-term contract until September 2023 in the first instance, but will be expected to continue for longer dependent upon funding. The post is based at the University of Southampton in the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences.
