Job description

The role

We are seeking a Research Software Engineering (RSE) to join the Advanced Computing Research Centre (ACRC), employed as part of several new and ongoing UKRI and Horizon Europe projects related to greenhouse gas (GHG) flux evaluation using atmospheric observations.

The RSE will play a leading role in the development of the new UK Emissions Measurement System (EMS), which aims to provide an operational GHG emissions evaluation system for the UK. The system will integrate data from observation networks, models and emission inventories, feeding, ultimately, into a live “dashboard” on UK emissions. The RSE will work with an established team of atmospheric experts in GHG measurement and modelling and ACRC software engineers to pull this data together, optimise workflows, and produce user-facing outcomes. Partners will include the National Physical Laboratory, the Met Office, and several UK universities.

Underpinning this work will be the OpenGHG platform (https://openghg.org), developed by our team. This project has brought together atmospheric chemists, research software engineers and cloud computing specialists in academia and industry to develop a cloud platform for routine update, integration, analysis and visualisation of in situ and remotely sensed greenhouse gas observations, emissions inventories, mapping and other ancillary data. The platform is designed to be extensible by greenhouse gas scientists with the ultimate aim of providing a hub that can be used to generate robust, higher-resolution, operational flux estimates for researchers and key stakeholders (e.g., government, industry, the public).

The RSE’s work will also link to the Bristol-led projects PARIS, a Horizon Europe project that is investigating GHG emissions with European partners, and InHALE, a NERC Highlight Topic examining regional and global trends in halocarbon emissions.

What will you be doing?

The RSE will work on the above projects to develop the software and technologies necessary to integrate sensors, simulations and visualisation platforms. The RSE will seek to maximise productivity by collaborating with researchers through consultation, advocacy, training and hands-on programming work. They will be embedded in the Atmospheric Chemistry Research Group, and work day-to-day with partners from across the UK, Europe and worldwide.

You should apply if

We are seeking an ambitious, self-motivated who holds a degree or higher in a computational field. The RSE will need expert knowledge of computer programming and hardware; experience of using key software development tools, such as Python and version control systems (git); they will also need to be adaptable and have excellent communication skills. Having knowledge or experience of underlying cloud infrastructure such as object stores or serverless would be a bonus, although not expected as appropriate training will be given.

The contract will initially be for a 2-year period and can likely be extended, if mutually agreeable. The post is available to start as soon as possible.
