NPL is seeking scientists/engineers to join the Electrochemistry Group at NPL Teddington (South-West London) in a permanent position. This position is ideally suited to a recent STEM graduate (or equivalent experience) with practical laboratory experience wishing to perform experimental work in a leading research institute.

From high energy density batteries to hydrogen electrolysers and biomedical sensors, electrochemistry is the fundamental science that underpins many of the technologies driving us towards an environmentally conscious and prosperous future. Development of these critical technologies relies on high quality electrochemical measurements, generating accurate and reproducible data. As world leaders in electrochemical metrology (the science of electrochemical measurement) NPL’s Electrochemistry Group works with world-leading academic groups and industrial partners to support fundamental scientific developments and real-world technology challenges.

The successful applicant will work with experienced colleagues across the Electrochemistry Group to help deliver projects focused on high energy density batteries. The work will include, but not limited to, calibration and maintenance of battery cyclers, potentiostats and temperature chambers, cell assembly (coin cells and pouch cells), cell testing, post-mortem/post-test analysis, data plotting and data curation, and development of best-practice guides on battery testing. Additionally, a significant part of the work involves keeping our laboratories and equipment running smoothly. The role will primarily be laboratory based with a strong focus on performing experiments to a high quality and supporting senior colleagues in organising the labs.

The following are required to successfully deliver the role:

Essential

  • A BSc, MSc (or equivalent experience) in chemistry, physics, chemical engineering, or another STEM subject.
  • Experience working safely and to a high quality in a laboratory
  • The ability to effectively co-operate with diverse project teams
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • A growth mindset and a passion for professional and personal development
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team, as needed
  • Resilience and the ability to work in a dynamic environment

Advantageous

Experience or knowledge of any of the skills listed below would be beneficial but are not required to be considered for the role. Successful applicants may expect to develop many of these skills with support from colleagues.

  • Performing risk assessments and working in controlled environments
  • Performing electrochemical measurements relating to batteries, fuel cells, electrolysers or corrosion
  • Working in an ISO 17025 or similarly accredited laboratory
  • Laboratory or project administration skills
  • Data plotting using Origin or similar advanced graphing software
  • Willingness to travel within the UK when required
