Job description
We are seeking an exceptional candidate for the role of Research Laboratory Specialist who has a passion for research and will strive to develop the Composites Suite and related labs and their research to the highest possible standard. The post-holder will contribute significantly to running, managing and expanding a world-leading suite of research laboratories focussed on the manufacture and characterisation of composite materials and the synthesis of emerging and multifunctional composites.
Duties and responsibilities
As Research Laboratory Specialist, you will provide expert knowledge on the use of all equipment and facilities relating to the Composites Suite, Multifunctional lab and other related labs. You will work closely with academics and technical staff to ensure the safe and effective running of these labs, as well as using your skills to develop ideas and innovative manufacturing solutions related to the research activities. Representing these world-class facilities, you will actively promote their use and achievements within the Department, across Imperial, and beyond to industry and the wider research community. This will involve directly engaging with industry consultancy projects. As the laboratory manager, you will take responsibility for management of Health and Safety which will include lab inductions, risk assessments, safe disposal of chemicals and proposals for improvements of these processes. Engaging with the work being undertaken in these laboratories, you will contribute to the research delivery and excellence.
Essential requirements
- Master’s in an area related to polymer composites. For candidates wishing to pursue a PhD, a part-time funded PhD will be offered subject to conditions including meeting of the Department’s minimum entry requirements for doctoral study.
- Research experience in materials chemistry and composite manufacture
- Thorough understanding of safe working practice and health and safety in an engineering laboratory.
- Experience in learning the use and research applications of new equipment.
- Research experience in designing new or adapting existing equipment.
- Practical and experimental experience involving working in a laboratory.
- Experience of supervising project students or technical staff.
