The Leidos Military and Veterans Health Solutions Operation has an opening for a Biomechanics Research Engineer to join the Operational Readiness Directorate at the Naval Health Research Center in San Diego, CA. This is an exciting opportunity to support research projects aimed at studying military-related physical performance and injury.

The Biomechanics Researcher will support research projects for the Warfighter Performance Department and the Medical Modeling and Simulation Department in the Operational Readiness Directorate. The Biomechanics Research Engineer will conduct research studies using human subjects research data, analyze and process data, and develop reports, abstracts and/or manuscripts based on that data.

This is an entry-level position and responsibilities will be performed under general guidance from the Principal Investigator and senior research staff. The Biomechanics Research Engineer will develop scientific research products, solutions, and processes using basic principles, theories and concepts within the areas of biomechanics, biomedical engineering, kinesiology, and computer programming. This opportunity is primarily an in-lab data analysis and processing position but may require some time (approx 20%) in field-based data collection which may occur in extended hours, overnight, and on weekends/holidays.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Effectively communicate with peers, project leads, and the government customer in performance of research projects and related program efforts.

  • Conduct research related to warfighter performance, warfighter physical and physiological health, and overall operational readiness. Conduct human subject data collection in laboratory and field settings.

  • Analyze current anatomical injury modeling and simulation capabilities for the Department of Defense. Assist in the development of anatomically accurate computational models for injury analysis.

  • Examine and perform post-processing analysis techniques for high-rate blast data.

  • Load, process, and summarize various data types and large files using MATLAB or similar program. Further organize, clean, sort, and analyze data using SPSS, R, SAS, or related data analysis programs and interpret meaningful findings in tables, graphs, and written form.

  • Assess the physical response of instrumentation used in testing of various loading schemes, including blast and impact.

  • Understand and independently troubleshoot basic electronics and equipment such as accelerometers, strain gauges, triggering systems, sensors, and connections to other equipment.

  • Assist with regulatory documentation including agreements and the maintenance of research protocols related to funded research projects

  • Perform thorough review of published literature and government technical communications. Summarize and communicate findings to be used in grant applications and during dissemination of research.

  • Work independently to achieve day-to-day objectives which impact operational results and project deliverables for the Operational Readiness Directorate.

  • Identify and assist with procurement of laboratory equipment; use and maintain laboratory equipment for research studies

  • Travel to various settings as needed for data collection, as well as for conference presentations, meetings, and other customer requirements.

  • Ensure research tasks are completed on time and of appropriate professional quality.

  • Effectively communicate results of projects to military and academic communities as co-author on presentations, peer-reviewed journal publications, technical reports, and letters to military officials.

  • Assist the Principal Investigators in managing local and outlying US Department of Defense collaborative relationships necessary for completion of project-specific milestones, specifically as it relates to software applications and programming.

  • Aid in preparing periodic internal reports and status updates.

  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as required for the customer research mission.

Basic Qualifications

We are looking for candidates who:

  • Have completed a bachelor’s degree from an accredited US college or university, or international university of equivalent standard.

  • Have three or more years of related experience.

  • Have completed basic technical coursework including multivariable calculus, statics, and dynamics. Interested candidates are encouraged to submit a copy of their transcript (official or unofficial) with their application.

  • Demonstrate strong technical writing skills with an ability to write research protocols, technical reports, journal articles, and conference papers.

  • Demonstrate strong programming skills with an ability to independently assess, suggest, and potentially develop program software applications for use in other research and data collection as operational military needs dictate.

  • Demonstrate strong computer hardware and technical skills with experience in electrical engineering, networking, and hardware components, and demonstrate capability of setting up new devices or troubleshooting hardware.

  • Are a self-starter, act on objectives in an independent manner, demonstrate leadership, work independently and in a team, and effectively plan and prioritize work.

  • Demonstrate the ability to interact positively and in a professional manner within a research-oriented environment.

  • Demonstrate excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills and an ability to work cooperatively in a team setting. This includes flexibility in responding to changing demands, timelines, and priorities, as well as possessing strong customer service focus.

  • Are willing to travel, up to 10% time, as needed for customer-directed requirements.

  • Are willing and able to work non-regular hours, as well as extended hours, such as overnight and on weekends as needed for data collection or other customer efforts.

  • Hold US Citizenship and are able to obtain and maintain a SECRET government security clearance.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Hold an active Interim or Secret Security clearance.

  • Preferred completion of biomechanics, fluid mechanics, optimization, and/or continuum mechanics.

Pay Range:

Pay Range $63,050.00 - $97,000.00 - $130,950.00

The Leidos pay range for this job level is a general guideline only and not a guarantee of compensation or salary. Additional factors considered in extending an offer include (but are not limited to) responsibilities of the job, education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity, alignment with market data, applicable bargaining agreement (if any), or other law.
