Job description
Atomic Machines is developing an entirely new digital manufacturing platform (“AMP”) that will enable the creation of micro-scale machines that existing technologies are unable to produce. Our zero-tooling platform will have a profound impact on the rate of industry-wide innovation while enabling mass scale production of transformational devices. We are also designing and building devices ourselves utilizing our platform, and our first products have exceptional product/market fit.
This is the starting point for us in pursuit of a massive world-changing mission that promises to radically enhance humanity’s command of matter. Joining forces with us means becoming part of an incredibly talented, inventive and passionate multi-disciplinary team running hard to make our platform, products and vision a reality. You will have the opportunity to help define the company from its earliest days. You’ll be challenged to learn and grow as a builder and a leader as the company itself grows rapidly. And you will receive significant equity compensation - you’ll truly be a company owner and benefit financially from our overall success.
Our offices are in Berkeley and Santa Clara, California.
About this Role:
We are seeking an experienced and innovative R&D engineer to design and create new materials, processes, and integration strategies in our device fabrication workflows. In this role, you will apply your first-principles understanding of materials and chemical sciences in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary engineering setting to unlock novel functionalities in our devices. At the same time, you will contribute critically to our mission to revolutionize materials manufacturing by translating your lab-scale processes to our unique digital manufacturing platform.
What You'll Do:
- Execute experiments to understand processing-structure-property relationships in a range of materials – metals, polymers, ceramics, and composites.
- Synthesize materials and composites to be integrated into functional devices, employing different material transformation strategies. (e.g., high-temperature, low-pressure, laser-induced)
- Apply advanced bulk and surface characterization techniques to evaluate material and chemical structure. (e.g., SEM/EDS, FIB, TEM, XRD, X-ray tomography, XPS, Raman/IR spectroscopic)
- Develop and perform material property tests to determine mechanical, electrical, magnetic, and thermal characteristics of our materials.
- Analyze experimental data, summarize key findings, and report at regular team meetings.
- Communicate and work cross-functionally with other disciplines to understand materials requirements and provide feedback based on materials expertise.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Material Science, Chemical, Mechanical, Electrical Engineering, or other related field.
- Ph.D. in Materials Science/Engineering preferred
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Lab experience required
