We have an exciting opportunity for you to join us as a Research & Development Engineer. In this role, you will be developing new power cable products and technology for the thriving offshore renewable energy sector. As part of the Product Development team, this role is based at our Hartlepool facility. As a Research & Development Engineer you will be working on technology to support the future of renewable power generation. You will have the opportunity to develop and qualify cables and accessories with increased operating voltages and stresses, such as our leading 72kV Semi-wet Insulation system and Vulcanised Factory joint systems.
As a Research & Development Engineer your main duties will be:
- Research and develop new technologies, as part of specific allocated Product Development Projects, to meet JDR identified product requirements, as well as meeting customer requirements, and relevant international standards.
- Drive factory trials, prototype testing and qualification, including destructive testing to verify models and design parameters using both internal facilities and Europe’s leading High Voltage test facilities and certification authorities.
- Generate engineering models and calculations (using Inventor/CAD, Comsol, Excel, Matlab etc); using engineering fundamentals alongside creative flair to design the best new products and optimised processes.
- Effectively transfer new products and processes into the wider business workflows
- Project Management of Product Development Projects
- Compile and update technical documentation: Design Specifications and Procedures, Test Procedures, and Purchase Specifications, whilst ensuring a high level of accuracy is present in all documents.
- Support, and potentially lead, the development of internal business cases to demonstrate the commercial viability of new technology development work, liaising with internal stakeholders to ensure a solid set of assumptions.
- Engage with suppliers, customers and third parties, using NDAs as applicable, in bringing appropriate new technology, new materials and new suppliers into JDR, whilst maximising JDR’s protection of IPR
- Input to the Design Manual, defining the rules and process by which projects are engineered.
- Operate with the company business systems, including but not limited to: Vault document control, Visual ERP manufacturing and Livewire systems. (Training will be provided for these systems).
- Provide technical support and expertise for the Development, Engineering, Production, Analysis, Quality and other business departments.
- Write and deliver conference presentations on technology developments to further JDR marketing activities
JOB REQUIREMENTS
The candidate should be a Degree qualified professional engineer with an interest in becoming a Chartered Engineer
You should ideally have previous experience of R&D / industrial design experience in a relevant technical area, ideally within the offshore renewables industry or similar, which may include one of more of the following;
- Contributing to and/or leading R&D projects in the area of Mechanical engineering
- Technical product design and development in commercial R&D or academic spheres with a good understanding of relevant international standards (IEC, CIGRE and IEEE, etc.)
- Exposure within the offshore renewables industry
- Knowledge of/or experience of the design, manufacture and/or testing of MV and HV cables preferably subsea but not essential
