Research Associate in Earth Science (two posts available) Manchester, England

The University of Manchester
Full Time Manchester, England 35308 - 43155 GBP ANNUAL Today
Job description

The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences seeks to appoint TWO post-doctoral research associates to work on the NERC-funded “MV4D” project (Magmatic volatiles in the fourth dimension) awarded to the University of Manchester. These positions are available from 01/09/23 until 31/08/26.

The MV4D project aims to resolve the volatile signatures and inventories of distinctive mantle sources that feed major basaltic eruptions. The successful applicants will develop, test and apply new 3D physical and chemical imaging techniques of crystal-hosted melt and fluid inclusions; quantify volatile partitioning between glass, fluid and non-silicate phases; and construct high-resolution time series of melt volatile contents and mantle volatile sources for target eruptions including Fagradalsfjall (Iceland) and Tajogaite (La Palma).

The successful applicants will work alongside project PI, Dr Margaret Hartley, and members of the volcanology and magmatic petrology groups at the University of Manchester (Dr David Neave, Dr Margherita Polacci, Prof Ray Burgess, Prof Mike Burton) and the University of Liverpool (Dr Katy Chamberlain). They will liaise with and visit project partners at the University of Iceland (Reykjavik) and INVOLCAN (Canary Islands) to conduct field studies and acquire samples for physical and chemical analysis.

Both positions will include working towards the objectives of the MV4D project, overseas travel to project partners, presenting project results at national and international conferences, and writing papers for publication in research journals.

The successful applicants will have a PhD (or be nearing completion of a PhD) or equivalent qualification/experience in Earth Science or a related field of study. They will be nationally recognised authorities in magmatic petrology, geochemistry, volcanology, or another relevant field, and have a publication track record commensurate to their career stage. They will have sufficient specialist knowledge in the discipline to develop the research programme and to establish new analytical and computational methodologies. They will be able to work independently; collaborate with the wider research team; and act as a leader when required.

Applicants will ideally have experience in one or more of the following: conducting geochemical microanalysis of geological samples; working with magmatic volatile datasets; analysis and interpretation of 3D imaging datasets; writing computational models such as machine learning algorithms. However, all training can be provided.
