Job Purpose
The post holder will make a leading contribution to an exciting programme of complex intervention research led by Professor Sharon Simpson. You will be expected to contribute to the formulation and submission of research publications as well as help manage and direct complex projects within the Complexity in Health Programme of the MRC/CSO Social and Public Health Sciences Unit (SPHSU). The project that you will be mainly working on is the ASSIST Global trial. This trial is testing the feasibility and acceptability of a smoking prevention intervention for young people in three countries – China, Indonesia and the Philippines.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Perform the following activities in conjunction with and under the guidance of the Principal/Co Investigator:
1. Take a leading role in the design and delivery of the process evaluation.
2. Take a leading role in working with country partners to complete qualitative interviews and analyse qualitative data.
3. Take a leading role in ensuring smooth communications and team working between different country partners.
4. Take the lead in designing and delivering training to country partners.
5. Support the ASSIST Project Manager in all study related activities.
6. Undertake literature reviews.
7. Take a leading role in the planning and conduct of assigned research individually or jointly in accordance with the project deliverables and project/group/School/College research strategy.
8. Document research output including analysis and interpretation of all data, maintaining records and databases, drafting technical/progress reports and papers as appropriate.
9. Establish and maintain your research profile research profile and reputation and that of The University of Glasgow/School/Research Group, including leading and contributing to publications of international quality in high profile/quality refereed journals, enhancing the research impact in terms of economic/societal benefit, and gathering indicators of esteem.
10. Present work at international and national conferences, at internal and external seminars, colloquia and workshops to develop and enhance our research profile.
11. Take a leading role in the identification of potential funding sources and assist in the development of proposals to secure funding from internal and external bodies to support future research within SPHSU.
12. Survey the research literature and environment, understand the research challenges associated with the project & subject area, & develop/implement a suitable research strategy.
13. Take a leading role in developing and maintaining collaborations with colleagues and participate in team/ group/ meetings/ seminars/ workshops across the research Unit/Institute/College/University and wider community.
14. Perform administrative tasks related to the activities of the research group and School, including Budgets/Expenditure.
15. Make a leading contribution to teaching activities [e.g. demonstrating etc.] and associated admin as assigned by the Head of School and in consultation with Principal Investigator.
16. Keep up to date with current knowledge and recent advances in the field/discipline and engage in continuing professional development activities as appropriate.
17. Take the lead in the organisation, supervision, mentoring and training of undergraduate and/or postgraduate students and less experienced members of the project team to ensure their effective development.
18. Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Head of School/Director of Research Institute.
19. Contribute to the enhancement of the University’s international profile in line with the University’s Strategic Plan, World Changers Together.
Qualifications:
Essential
A1 Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 (PhD) or alternatively possess the equivalent in professional qualifications and experience, with experience of personal development in a similar or related role(s)
Knowledge and Skills:
Essential
C1 Specialist theoretical and practical knowledge related to developing and evaluating complex interventions.
C2 An interest in health or public health and comprehensive and up-to-date knowledge of the wider subject area or subject specialism (e.g. public health, social sciences)
C3 Knowledge of qualitative research methods
C4 Skills in qualitative analyses including using specialist qualitative analysis software (e.g. NVIVO)
C5 Research creativity and cross-discipline collaborative ability as appropriate
C6 Excellent communication skills [oral and written], including public presentations and ability to communicate complex data/concepts clearly and concisely.
C7 Excellent interpersonal skills including team working and a collegiate approach.
C8 Appropriate workload/time/project/budget/people management skills
C9 Extensive IT and data analysis/interpretation skills as appropriate
C10 Self-motivation, initiative and independent thought/working.
C11 Problem solving skills including a flexible and pragmatic approach.
C12 Proven commitment to supporting the career development of colleagues and to other forms of collegiality appropriate to the career stage
Desirable
D1 Knowledge of the scientific principles of randomised controlled trials and the current legal, governance and ethical requirements
D2 Knowledge of mixed methods research
D3 Commitment to open research, as appropriate to the discipline, through open data, open code, open educational resources, and practices that support replication.
Experience:
Essential
E1 Sufficient relevant research experience [or equivalent] appropriate to an early career researcher
E2 Project or subject specific experience, including experience of conducting interviews and qualitative analyses.
E3 Experience of working in multi-site studies or projects with multiple partners
E4 Experience of scientific writing and evidence of an emerging track record of publications in a relevant field
E5 Proven ability to deliver quality outputs in a timely and efficient manner.
E6 Experience of making a leading contribution in academic activities
Desirable
F1 Experience of conducting a process evaluation
F2 Experience of working with partners from overseas particularly lower or middle income countries.
F3 Experience of project or trial management
F4 Experience of applying for ethical approval
Terms and Conditions
Salary will be Grade 7, £38,474 - £43,155 per annum pro rata.
This position is fixed term for 19 months, with a proposed start date of 2 October 2023. It is part time, 24.5 hours per week – work pattern to be discussed at interview.
