An exciting opportunity is available for a Research Associate to work on a research programme aiming to ensure that junior doctor (Intern) posts in Ireland are optimally configured to offer the highest quality training, excellent opportunities for clinical experience, and placements that put junior doctors at the heart of clinical care.
The postholder will work on a unique Irish Medical Council-funded programme grant entitled ‘External Review and Recommendations regarding the quality and configuration of Medical Education and Training Posts’, whose purpose is to review and make recommendations regarding medical intern training posts in Ireland.
The successful candidate will be an experienced researcher, with expertise in healthcare education or social sciences/educational research, and, ideally, an understanding of the postgraduate medical education environment. They will be joining an established team reflecting a longstanding and effective collaboration between Cardiff University School of Medicine and the Cardiff Unit for Research and Evaluation in Medical and Dental Education (CUREMeDE), based in the School of Social Sciences. They will be expected to undertake administrative tasks associated with the research project, including conducting literature searching and reviews, planning and conducting qualitative interviews and focus groups, undertaking and assisting with regular reporting to the project board, and contributing to the timely and efficient delivery of the project stages.
You will collaborate with Mrs Julie Browne and Professor Alison Bullock on the data collection and analysis required to deliver the project. This is a great opportunity to assist in the delivery of an ambitious project that has the potential for policy impact in medical training across the whole of Ireland. The postholder will be based in the Heath Park campus, Cardiff. The majority of roles at Cardiff University are currently operating under “blended working” arrangements, with staff having the flexibility to work partly from home and partly from the University campus depending on specific business requirements. Discussions around these arrangements can take place after the successful candidate has been appointed.

Salary £35,333 - £42,155 per annum, pro rata (Grade 6). Appointments to roles at Cardiff University are usually made at bottom of scale unless in exceptional circumstances however, for this position, the starting salary is capped at £37,474 due to limited funding.

Job Description
To conduct research within medical and healthcare education and contribute to the overall research performance of the School and University, carrying out research leading to the publishing of high-quality research. To pursue excellence in research and to inspire others to do the same.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Research
- To conduct research within medical and healthcare education in support of an Irish Medical Council-funded project to review and make recommendations regarding the quality and configuration of medical training posts in Ireland and contribute to the overall research performance of the School and University by the production of measurable outputs including bidding for funding, and publishing in national academic journals and conferences.
- To develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research including research funding proposals.
- To attend and or present at conferences/seminars at a local and national level as required.
- To undertake administrative tasks associated with the research project, including the planning and organisation of the project and the implementation of procedures required to ensure accurate and timely reporting.
- To conduct data collection (interviews and focus groups) and analysis required to deliver the project.
- To prepare research ethics and research governance applications as appropriate.
- To review and synthesise existing research literature, reports, grey literature and workforce data within the field.
- To participate in School research activities.
- To build and create networks both internally and externally to the university, to influence decisions, explore future research requirements, and share research ideas for the benefit of research projects.
Other
- To engage effectively with industrial, commercial and public sector organisations, professional institutions, other academic institutions etc., regionally and nationally to raise awareness of the School’s profile, to cultivate strategically valuable alliances, and to pursue opportunities for collaboration across a range of activities. These activities are expected to contribute to the School and the enhancement of its regional and national profile.

Person Specification
Qualifications and Education
1. Postgraduate degree at PhD level (or nearing completion / submission) in a related subject area or relevant career experience
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
2. An established expertise and proven portfolio of research and/or relevant career experience within the following research fields:
4. Proven ability to publish in national journals / national/international conferences and/or other research outputs
5. Knowledge and understanding of competitive research funding to be able to develop applications to funding bodies
