Job description
Directorate: People Services
Hours: 18.5 hours a week
Contract Type: Permanent
Location: The Light House, St Marks Road, Chaddesden, Derby, DE21 6AL
This is an exciting opportunity to work within a newly redesigned Residential Short Breaks service for disabled children and young people. The Light House is a 10 bedded unit providing residential short breaks for young people with a moderate to severe learning disability along with challenging behaviour or physical disabilities and complex health needs. The aim of the unit is to promote independence and social opportunities for disabled young people within a safe and fun environment.
The key responsibilities of the post are the ability to shift lead, manage and lead a team of other residential child care workers to enable young people to have the best possible care in a home from home environment. Supervision of other staff is part of the role, along with the ability to read and follow care plans, ensuring that the team works to the outcomes of the young people. Good written and verbal communication skills are essential, ensuring all recording is accurate and timely, and that children’s plans are regularly reviewed and updated. The post holder will receive regular supervision, good support and will be part of a strong team of committed and passionate workers. The ability to motivate a team and work co-operatively with managers and commissioners in the continuing development of the service within a budgetary framework is essential. We are looking for people who are positive, creative, organised and good at planning, along with the ability to take responsibility for the day to day running of the unit.
The ability to communicate and form relationships with young people is vital, along with experience of working with disabled young people. The administration of medication and carrying out of clinical tasks is part of this role, so a willingness to undertake extensive training in these areas is essential.
Shift work is an essential part of the post and includes evening and weekend working. You must be flexible and be able to work shifts to accommodate the needs of the service. Due to the nature of the post, applicants must be 22 years of age or above.
