Job Purpose
You will contribute to a project, ‘Physical activity, social connectedness and healthy ageing (PACES): intervention development’, which is part of the larger PACES project and funded by the UKRI Medical Research Council. You will be working with project lead Professor Sharon Simpson, within the Complexity in Health and Relationships and Health SPHSU programmes, and the broader PACES team. The role is to support the early-stage development of place-based interventions to improve physical activity and social connectedness to support healthy ageing, and will involve various tasks including: conducting literature review and evidence synthesis, supporting the facilitation of, and analysis of data from, participatory workshops and working groups, and conducting and analysing qualitative interviews.
The post will suit those with interest and experience in some of the following: interviewing techniques, collaborative group working, facilitating workshops, participatory methods, visual methods and qualitative analysis. Those with knowledge and interest in areas such as systems thinking, complexity science, public health, or intervention development would be able to apply those skills to the project.
The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to the formulation and submission of reports for the funder, research publications and research proposals as well as helping to manage and direct this complex and challenging project as opportunities allow.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Perform the following activities in conjunction with and under the guidance of the Principal/Co Investigators:
1. Plan and conduct assigned research, under the supervision of the Principal Investigators and in accordance with the project strategy.
2. Undertake literature reviews and evidence syntheses.
3. With expert support, develop materials and organise a series of workshops to explore causal factors and intervention ideas related to physical activity and social connectedness, within the two project locations.
4. Set up and conduct qualitative interviews and analyse qualitative data.
5. Document research outputs including analysis and interpretation of all data, maintaining records and databases, drafting technical/progress reports and papers as appropriate.
6. Develop and enhance your research profile and reputation and that of The University of Glasgow/School of Health and Wellbeing/PACES research group, including contributing to publications of international quality in high profile/quality refereed journals, enhancing the research impact in terms of economic/societal benefit, and gathering indicators of esteem.
7. Contribute to the presentation of work at international and national conferences, at internal and external seminars, colloquia and workshops to develop and enhance our research profile.
8. Contribute to the identification of potential funding sources and assist in the development of proposals to secure funding from internal and external bodies to support future research.
9. Collaborate with colleagues and participate in team/group meetings/seminars/workshops across the research Group/School/College/University and wider community.
10 Contribute to the organisation, supervision, mentoring and training of undergraduate and/or postgraduate students and less experienced members of the project team to ensure their effective development.
11 Perform administrative tasks related to the activities of the research group and School, including budgets/expenditure.
12. Carry out modest teaching activities [e.g. demonstrating etc.], if needed, and associated admin as assigned by the Head of School and in consultation with Principal Investigator.
13. Engage non-academic audiences in or with your research – as partners, participants, collaborators and research users.
14. Contribute to the Unit’s public engagement and knowledge exchange activities to ensure research evidence reaches and influences a broad range of stakeholders.
15. Keep up to date with current knowledge and recent advances in the field/discipline.
16. Engage in continuing professional development activities as appropriate.
17. Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Director of the Social and Public Health Sciences Unit and the Principal Investigators.
18. Contribute to the enhancement of the University’s international profile in line with the University’s Strategic Plan, World Changers Together.

Qualifications
Essential
A1 SCQF Level 10 [Honours degree] in a relevant subject or a cognate discipline, or equivalent.
Desirable
B1 An awarded [or recently submitted or near completion] PhD in a relevant field, e.g. related to public health intervention, complex systems, participatory methods.

Knowledge and Skills

Essential**
C1 Knowledge of qualitative research methods
C2 Skills in qualitative analyses including using specialist qualitative analysis software (e.g. NVIVO)
C3 Skills in literature review and evidence synthesis
C4 Research creativity and cross-discipline collaborative ability as appropriate
C5 Excellent communication skills [oral and written], including public presentations and ability to communicate complex data/concepts clearly and concisely
C6 Excellent interpersonal skills including team working and a collegiate approach
C7 Appropriate workload/time/project/budget/people management skills
C8 Extensive IT and data analysis/interpretation skills as appropriate
C9 Self-motivation, initiative and ability to demonstrate independence
C10 Problem solving skills, including a flexible and pragmatic approach
C11 Theoretical and practical knowledge in a public-health related field, e.g. physical activity, loneliness/social connectedness, public health intervention development.
C12 Relevant knowledge of research related to one or more of social systems, health policy, intervention development, or collaborative group decision making.

Experience
Essential
E1 Project or subject specific experience, including experience of conducting qualitative interviews (or focus groups) and qualitative analyses
E2 Sufficient relevant research experience [or equivalent] appropriate to an early career researcher
E3 Experience of scientific writing
E4 Proven ability to deliver quality outputs in a timely and efficient manner
E5 Evidence of an emerging track record of publications in a relevant field
E6 Experience of collaborative team working
Desirable:
F1 Experience of supporting the facilitation of workshops
F2 Experience of participatory methods
F3 Experience of applying systems thinking (or related approaches)
F4 Experience of intervention development

Terms and Conditions
Salary will be Grade 6, £31,502 - £35,308 per annum.
This position is full time and fixed term for 12 months, with a proposed start date of 2 October 2023.
