Job description
Faculty of Environment, Science and Economy
The above full-time, externally funded post is available on a fixed term basis from 01/09/2023 to 31/02/2024 in the Centre for Ecology and Conservation. We welcome applications from candidates interested in working part-time hours or job-sharing arrangements.
The post
The Faculty wishes to recruit a Graduate Research Assistant to support the work of Dr Kristian Metcalfe. This position is part of the Convex Seascape Survey, a global scientific programme that seeks to discover exactly how the ocean performs its vital role as the world's largest carbon sink, including assessing human influences on seabed carbon. Funded by Convex Insurance Group Ltd., the project is being undertaken in association with Blue Marine Foundation, with science led by the University of Exeter in collaboration with UK and international partners. This post will be based at the Cornwall Campus.
The successful applicant will work closely with Dr Kristian Metcalfe as well as other project researchers to conduct a structured literature review to characterise changes over time, and differences in bottom contacting mobile fishing gears globally (i.e., size, weight, penetration); with the latter feeding into a model that aims to map the contemporary intensity and distribution of bottom disturbance using vessel tracking data derived from automatic identification system (AIS) data.
About you
The successful applicant will be able to present information on research progress and outcomes, communicate complex information, orally, in writing and electronically and prepare proposals and applications to external bodies.
Applicants will be educated to first degree level or possess an equivalent qualification/experience in a related field of study or equivalent experience and be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge in the discipline and of research methods and techniques to work within established research programmes. Applicants will have a sound understanding of the project research topic and experience of providing support to researchers.
