Job description
You will be in charge of departing and arriving trains as per our customers’ orders, whether it’s aggregates or container trains or even engineering trains for Network Rail, which keep our railways safe come rain or snow (or autumn leaves!).
In terms of your role, you will be in charge of preparing the train for departure, which means putting it together according to the plan and checking it is safe to leave the yard by inspecting the wagons/containers for defects and faults while making sure all the paperwork is completed. Once that is done you will be able to watch the train roll away in satisfaction knowing it’s in perfect working condition.
- Previous operational/Ground staff/shunting experience within the Freight industry would be desirable, but not required.
- Experience in a safety critical role would be desirable.
- Experience gained in a Customer facing environment would be advantageous.
- Able to multi-task and make quick decisions for short notice changes to train plans.
- Ability to work independently and on your own initiative.
- Excellent and clear communication skills to relay important safety messages to your colleagues.
- Safety conscious and ability to remain calm in an event of an emergency situation.
- You must live within a 45 minute commuting distance from the depot.
A clean full (manual) UK driving licence is essential.
