Job description

The Royal Marsden Hospital is one of Europe’s largest Oncology centre and was the world’s first hospital dedicated to cancer research, diagnosis, treatment and education, with sites in Chelsea and Sutton. The Diagnostic Cross Sectional Imaging service provides an essential service to the Trust, including whole body and high quality oncology imaging, Mammography including large field and interventional procedures, Ultrasound as well as general X-Ray, IR, fluoroscopy and theatres.

Our partnership with The Institute of Cancer Research and other key organisations means we offer access to the newest clinical trials and clinical trials of novel anti-cancer agents; all imaging modalities are fundamental to this process and forefront techniques and protocols are constantly being evolved within Radiology.

We are currently inviting applications from enthusiastic cross-sectional trained radiographers for a 10-month fixed term Band 7 Diagnostic Radiographer post on the Sutton site. Applicants will preferably have significant post graduate experience and post and cross-sectional specific experience. Post graduate CT / MRI academic qualifications are desirable. The successful candidate should be an innovative, highly motivated radiographer with good communication skills, who is keen to contribute positively to the expanding cross-sectional service.

The post holder will be expected to be flexible in their approach as the department will operate between 8am to 8pm Monday to Friday and Saturday 9-5pm

The post holder will work as part of the cross-sectional team liaising with Radiologists and Clinicians in charge of a patient. They will work as part of the multi-disciplinary team liaising with clinical nurse specialists, ward staff and other departmental staff. They will also liaise with internal and external agencies. It is essential that the post holder has significant post graduate experience in CT and MRI. This post requires good analytical, organisational, communication, supervisory and computer skills.

The key working relationships will be with other MRI & CT radiographers, MRI superintendents on both Chelsea & Sutton sites, radiology clerical and admin staff, clinical scientists, consultant radiologists and clinical referrers

Clinical – MRI

  • To perform clinical MRI scans to produce diagnostic information appropriately as required by current protocols.
  • To maintain the highest standard of practical and theoretical knowledge to ensure a standard of excellence in MRI techniques, so that protocols may be modified in an appropriate manner in view of clinical indications, imaging findings or patient condition and problems in image quality are recognized and acted upon.
  • To be aware of COSHH and Health and Safety at Work Act and ensure their guidelines are followed. To be fully aware of the potential hazards of working in an area of strong magnetic field and to be familiar with the safety guidelines issued by the Medical Devices Agency 2002.
  • To be fully aware of the potential bio-effects of MRI and to ensure that the scanner is operated within safe limits at all times.To act at all times with consideration for the safety and welfare of patients.
  • To ensure that adequate protection is given to self, patients and other staff as laid out in the Local Rules for protection of persons in MRI and the Ionising Radiation Regulations.
  • To be familiar with and implement safety procedures (quench, fire, cardiac arrest) which are specific to the MR environment.
Clinical – CT & General
  • To ensure protocols and standards are maintained and improved to produce best diagnostic information and patient care.
  • To perform imaging examinations as an operator under the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2000.
  • To follow the Royal College of Radiologists (RCR) guidelines, local rules and the departmental standard operating procedures.
  • To comply with accurate patient identification procedures
  • To ensure referrals are justified correctly and booked in a timely manner.
  • To give advice where appropriate on the validity of requested examinations.
  • To be aware of Radiation safety when undertaking CT examinations and ensure the safety and protection of patients, staff and carers are adhered to.
  • To perform standard equipment Quality Assurance (QA), record results accurately and alert the Superintendent radiographer/medical physics as required.
Professional
  • To communicate effectively and empathetically with patients and their escorts prior to, during and after an examination. Patient presentation will include the unconscious, uncooperative, incapacitated, incompetent, disorientated and those with physical and mental disabilities.
  • To maintain high standards of patient care through good clinical practice and be actively involved in the quality management system and accreditation system
  • To maintain patient dignity and privacy and confidentiality.
Clerical
  • To receive, welcome and instruct patients attending for investigations.
  • To act as point of contact for users of the diagnostic imaging service dealing with colleagues, patients, carers and relatives in a helpful, reassuring and friendly manner.
  • To ensure previous imaging is available for comparison.
  • To carry out clerical duties as and when required.
Managerial
  • To assist in the education and training of staff and visitors to the department of MR safety issues and CT examinations/procedures.
  • To deputise for the modality Superintendent Radiographer in their absence.
  • To re-schedule patients in the event of total equipment breakdown.
  • To liaise with outside agencies, including service engineers and other hospitals.
  • Co-ordinate work area, allocate work and provide clinical guidance
  • To plan and prioritise patient workload based on clinical urgency.
  • Ensure staff are appraised annually, have clear objectives which link to department, division/directorate or corporate objectives and a personal development plan.
Research & Development
  • To contribute and participate in departmental audit
  • To provide imaging for drug trials and other clinical studies.
  • To adhere to trial protocols.
  • To participate in and contribute data to departmental surveys
  • To copy, anonymise and store trial data and images.
