Title: Quality Improvement Specialist – CHC
$53,000 - $63,000 / Posted Thru: 7-30-23

Location: Remote/Virtual

Purpose: This position provides consultation, coaching and technical support for quality improvement-focused projects within the Center for Healthy Communities (CHC). The QI Specialist is responsible for activities related to evidence-based, data driven, continuous quality improvement projects with public health partners and providers. The Quality Improvement Specialist provides tailored support across the lifespan of projects, from development to implementation and reporting, including internal support within project teams and communication and support to external partners.

This position involves a high level of interaction with a variety of partners and requires a deep understanding of methods, tools, and techniques related to formal quality improvement, including the Plan-Do-Study-Act cycle, the IHI Breakthrough Series Collaborative Model and tools for examining current process, root cause analysis, and so forth. The Quality Improvement Specialist will foster collaborative relationships and be involved in supporting quality improvement efforts through training and coaching, facilitating group processes, providing tailored technical assistance, and supporting a variety of improvement initiatives. The position requires a dynamic individual with strong facilitation and coaching skills who will collaborate with staff, external partners, and clients.

Duties and Responsibilities:


Planning and Implementation of Project Activities
  • Independently provide specialized support to quality improvement-focused projects and related partners.
  • Develop and facilitate customized quality improvement training and provide one-on-one team coaching tailored to client and partner needs.
  • Develop materials to support quality improvement learning collaboratives, facilitate collaborative learning sessions and activities, and provide tailored coaching to participating teams.
  • Apply equity-focused assessment, planning, facilitation, quality improvement, and other frameworks within community-based settings from start-up to closeout, including project design, implementation, ongoing reporting, final reporting, and dissemination.
  • Translate standards, methods, and frameworks into actionable presentations and tools to facilitate implementation for public health agencies.
  • Support clients and partners in designing engagement strategies for improvement focused efforts that are inclusive and meaningful.
  • Design and implement data collection activities that support planning and improvement efforts and center equity. This includes developing measures, designing basic data collection plans/protocols/instruments, compiling basic data, and accessing existing public health data.
  • Organize data and other sources of information to support making meaning, centering equity, identifying needs and assets, assessing opportunities for improvement, and identifying priorities.
  • Facilitate the develop action plans that are collaborative in nature and focus on achieving equity.
  • Independently prepare and review project-related documents, trainings, reports, and other written materials as needed.
  • Support all projects in a dynamic, responsive manner.

Supporting Community Partners
  • Lead the development, design, and creation of processes and products that support our community partners in implementing community-engaged quality improvement and planning processes.
  • Tailor processes based on the community context and needs of partners.
  • Independently plan and lead meetings, presentations, and facilitation activities, as appropriate.
  • Provide project collaborators and community partners personalized training, coaching, and technical support in public health improvement methods.
  • Exercise professionalism, skill, and comfort in interfacing with community partners, clients, and potential clients/partners.

Continuous Learning
  • Remain current on emerging best and promising practices in quality improvement and other modes of public health systems improvement.
  • Identify community/public health system needs and identify promising solutions at the system, agency, program, and practice level.

MPHI Responsibilities
  • Maintain MPHI-required internal training requirements.
  • Participate in company strategic planning and marketing initiatives to represent the Center as needed.

Qualifications/Requirements:


Education: Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field with 5 or more years of direct experience in public health improvement efforts. A Master’s degree is preferred for this position.

Experience: Minimum of 5 years of experience after completion of bachelor’s degree or 3 years’ experience with a Master’s degree. Experience independently supporting public health improvement efforts, including methodological design, data collection and analysis, complex group and process facilitation, technical support, report writing, and dissemination. Experience successfully leading quality improvement or similar work for public health initiatives required. Training or certification in quality improvement methods preferred.

  • Understanding of quality improvement fundamentals, including the Plan-Do-Study-Act cycle, model for improvement and some quality improvement tools (i.e., process map, fishbone diagram, affinity diagram, etc.).
  • Skill in teaching and coaching others in the application of improvement methodologies, tools, and techniques in a practical way that meets individuals where they are in their improvement journey.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills including the ability to manage multiple tasks and respond to overlapping deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills with comfort leading groups of all sizes through complicated processes.
  • Comfort in facilitating conversations on the spot as needs arise to support groups and teams in achieving forward progress with their improvement efforts.
  • Ability to work independently, analyze project needs, and monitor progress toward completion of tasks.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and written and oral communications skills.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements: This position involves working on a computer 50-100% of the time. In-state and out-of-state travel may be required, based on project and Center needs.
