JOB DESCRIPTION – Quality Manager
Job Title Quality Manager
Principle Aims of Job
To achieve ‘best in class’ ppm defects performance for the FTSL site as the measure applies to a sheet metal fabrications business [in the context of the envisaged volumes].
Skills
Qualified mechanical engineer with quality management experience obtained in an automotive/fabrication environment. Formal continuous improvement qualifications will compliment strong customer liaison skills and a persuasive communication competence. A ‘hands on’ ethos is appropriate to the role. Good problem solving and analytical skills are also required.
Relationships
Reports to Head of Site
Responsible for Evenwood/Tursdale
Close Liaison with Head of Site, Head of Engineering, Head of Manufacturing Operations, Production
Supervision, CI Manager, Welding Engineer.
Management Responsibilities
- To operate as a member of the company’s site management team.
- To support, implement and manage significant change across the company, ensuring that it is a technically strong service-orientated operation. The ongoing development and implementation of modern lean-based business practices is key.
- To implement and support a ‘training needs’-based approach to the development of direct reports in order to help achieve the company’s objectives. Formal successor planning should be carried out where appropriate.
- To ensure that all business decisions made by the jobholder and direct reports are controlled within the company’s published authority limits.
Key Responsibilities
- To operate as a member of the site management team with particular reference, but not limited to quality aspects. Helping to develop and improve the organisational culture is also key – continuous improvement, ‘can do’, supportive but demanding of excellence characteristics are relevant.
- Customer liaison with demanding automotive and ‘off highway’ vehicle customers such as JCB/Caterpillar/Mecalac/Volvo trucks, ensuring that the company’s quality ethos, systems and reporting is aligned with that of our major customers.
- Ensuring the current quality management system (ISO9001:2015) is maintained, developed, and improved to make sure it is effective, customer focused and keeps pace with the needs of the business. Investigating new technology, standards and systems. Keeping abreast with new developments in manufacturing and implementing change where feasible.
- Assessment of all quality concerns, including recommendations and corrective actions. Using 8D’s to close out concerns and improve processes long term. Leading day to day trouble shooting and problem solving, to drive world class quality methods and establish documentation/systems to ensure improvements are sustained.
- Implementation of robust process control improvements are essential, using established CI tools and lean manufacturing techniques.
- Improvement projects shall be documented and monitored using MAP’s plans for tracking and meeting targets.
- Introduction of modern Quality tools and techniques is a key element along with the mentoring of individuals.
- Daily/Monthly reporting / presentations to customers and management reviews as defined and agreed periodically with Site management.
- Project management of quality related projects such as the design and development of new jigs and fixtures to overcome quality issues and to increase future capabilities.
- Implementation of effective operator training plans relating to quality.
Key Competences
1. Quality Experience
In-depth knowledge of quality assurance systems in manufacturing environment. Experience of quality issues in production such as operator attitude, process control, waste management, paint on metal, glazing and an ability to influence quality issues within a metal fabrication environment.

Ability to demonstrate enthusiasm for successfully introducing change into a manufacturing environment.
3. Tenacity
The determination to get things right and stand up for quality at all times. The drive and strong mindedness to make things happen when opposed.
4. Influencing Skills
Ability to convince people of the importance of quality in manufacturing and the importance to get attention and respect of other managers on quality issues.
5. Customer Handling
Ability to manage all aspects of customer and supplier interaction on quality issues. Clear and timely communication is paramount.
6. Team Leading
Ability to manage relationships in a small quality team in a positive and flexible way so that a cohesive team spirit is developed, and individual contributions are maximised.
7. Organisational Skills
Ability to prioritise work and plan in detail for the completion of written communications such as reports, presentations and work instructions.
8. Analytical Skills
Ability to think quickly and solve problems.
