Role
To provide a technical support service to students and staff within Psychology under the direction of the Senior Technician, including; training, practical assistance and advice in the use of specialist equipment, techniques and computer software in designated Psychology rooms, suites and laboratories. Additionally, to support other practice areas within the faculty when required. This role is campus based working 37 hours per week. The start date will be on or around 14/02/2023 with a proposed end date of 06/04/2023.
Duties and responsibilities
- Provide dedicated support and advice for a wide-range of specialist equipment, techniques and computer software, such as Qualtrix and Psychopy, to students and staff for the Psychology subject area. Providing, when necessary, technical support, practical assistance or instruction, either on a one-to-one or group basis.
- Prepare the day-to-day requirements in order to support Psychology laboratory classes/lectures/ staff research, liaise, if necessary, between Psychology academics and ITMS.
- On a daily basis monitor and coordinate the Psychology online resources and systems including Virtual Learning Environments (VLE), such as BlackBoard Psychology Community, and Psychology equipment online booking systems. Ensure students are kept informed about the availability and scope of the psychology resources and related services.
- Support the management of the faculty’s immersive technology room including booking of sessions, security of the facility and general maintenance of the area.
- Assist with the maintenance, visual inspections and bookings of Psychology Laboratories, Psychological test materials, and equipment within the Division.
- Assist with the creation of Psychology subject area documentation; such as detailed user guides/instruction manuals for specialist equipment, systems and induction materials. To assist in the induction of undergraduate and postgraduate students.
- Assist with introducing new elements for workshops/practical classes, such as the preparation of all necessary documentation and safety forms required for any new working procedures.
- Carry out stock control duties as part of technical and psychology teams, maintain relevant databases and follow faculty procedures for replenishing stocks of consumables as appropriate.
- Liaise with the Senior Technician to make recommendations for equipment and consumables that will improve the facilities available for students and staff. Contact companies and liaise with representatives to arrange for presentations and demonstrations of products or services, which have the potential to improve the student experience. All Technicians are required to:
- Have a commitment to continuing professional development.
- Support open day and outreach events.
- Undertake First Aid and Evacuation Chair training to in order to contribute to the faculty’s required First Aid and evacuation provision.
- Perform any other duties commensurate with the job grade as reasonably required from time to time.

Skills and experience
A Psychology degree and eligibility for the British Psychological Society© Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC). A good working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, such as Teams. Experience of using a wide variety of AV and IT equipment within a learning environment. Good interpersonal and problem-solving skills. Willingness to undertake First Aid and or other training in order to contribute to the Faculty’s First Aid and evacuation provision. High standard of accuracy and attention to detail. Ability to manage time effectively and prioritise tasks and goals. Ability to work effectively as part of a team. Ability to communicate effectively with staff and students at all levels through a variety of methods in groups and individually.
