Brief Description
The Southern Region has two vacancies for Project Engineer [Track] roles; 1x permanent role and 1x fixed term 12mth contract (likely to go permanent). These roles will be supporting either the Switch & Crossing [S&C] or Plain Line [PL] Workbank Portfolios, within the Capital Delivery Engineering Team.
Based in London Puddle Dock Offices, you will be part of a dynamic team of Discipline Engineers and Managers, working in a matrix-style collaborative environment. You will have an excellent record of working as a team member, along with building cross-functional relationships with stakeholders and contracting organisations alike.
Your expertise as a railway track engineer will enable you to develop and assure solutions from concept remit to implementation and hand back and successfully manage them over their lifespan.
The roles are Regional and therefore, may support any of the Routes within Southern Region. Applicants should note a preference on their application to be considered for either the Project Engineering [S&C] or [PL] role but should be aware that they could be supporting either portfolio.

About the Roles:
This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced railway track engineer to undertake the management of a complex portfolio of mainline railway infrastructure work, either with S&C or PL, working in conjunction with a multi-disciplinary team and a group of Framework Contractors.
There is an expectation of being able to work from an office location 3-days per week [in conjunction with the Southern Region Flexible Working Policy]. The successful candidate will also be expected to work closely with our framework contractors, which shall require regular depot visits to either Tonbridge or Basingstoke.
Key Responsibilities:
- Implement Network Rail systems and procedures to maintain a cost effective, high quality, safe and environmentally responsible approach to design, construction, commissioning and management of assets, compliant with all relevant legislation. Liaise with regulators and others as appropriate.
- Engineer to the standards and specification of Railway Group and Network Rail Company standards, formal specifications and procedures.
- Manage all engineering activities so that they result in schemes that are affordable and meet programme requirements in a safe and environmentally responsible manner for time, cost and quality.
- Maintain the use of relevant techniques and procedures of quantified and qualitative risk assessment and HAZOP analysis to allocated projects and manage the environmental aspects of works in accordance with Network Rails environmental policy.
- Monitor designers, consultants and contractors.
- Provide advice in respect of all construction activities, including testing and commissioning and site supervision. Manage the design and/or construction elements of relevant projects meet the requirements of current legislation, including Construction Design Management (CDM) regulations.
- Undertake assurance and verification reviews of design and/or construction activities. Arrange audits of contractors monitoring safety, environment and quality of design, construction, testing and commissioning and management systems is adequate.
- Carry out the duties of Designated Project Engineer (DPE) for specific projects.
- Identify and share best practice across the various project teams.
Job Skills, Experience and Qualifications
Essential
- Relevant experience in railway track discipline engineering, ideally with involvement across multi discipline areas.
- Technical qualifications to HNC/HND or equivalent GNVQ level in Structures or Mechanical Engineering.
- Knowledge of quality assurance.
- CDM, CSM Risk Assessment and Engineering Management competency.
- A sound knowledge of railway policies and standards.
- An understanding of safety management systems and risk assessment techniques, including HazID and HazOP risk assessments and local track system risk assessments.
- Working towards membership of a relevant professional institution (ICE or PWI)
Desirable
- Membership of a relevant professional body with Chartered Incorporated Engineer status and/or educated to degree level.
- Knowledge of structuring safety cases.
- Experience in supporting the Project Acceptance Process.
- An appreciation of environmental and sustainability issues in engineering works.
Salary: Band 4C £41,711 - £46,925 plus an additional location allowance of £3,270
