This is great opportunity for an undergraduate looking for paid work experience over a period up to12 months with Business Development and Innovation Team, Birmingham City Council.

You will be supporting the work of a small team focussed on stimulating business activity and job creation within the City and region.

Working within a busy business-like environment with typical day including handling enquiries for new programmes, setting up meetings, taking minutes, organising briefing sessions with businesses and partners, marketing and promotional activity, updating databases, undertaking financial and business assessment for applications for funding and attending investment panel meetings as examples.

The Business Development and Innovation Team (BDI) is providing strategic leadership within Birmingham City Council, West Midlands region to improve business confidence, encourage investment, stimulate business activity and create jobs opportunities through a range of business development programmes.

It has successfully developed a broad portfolio of programme activity to the value of £33m over the next few years.

The BDI Team is now looking to provide 12 month paid placement opportunities for 3rd year undergraduates to help deliver these programmes.
The project is part-funded by European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) via the West Midlands – Regional Competitiveness and Employment Programme.

PURPOSE OF ROLE

1.1 To support Project Managers and Co-ordinators to co-ordinate, deliver and monitor a range of business related programmes aimed at improving the prosperity and growth of the Birmingham economy and the key objectives of the Local Enterprise Partnership.

1.2 To support Project Managers and Co-ordinators to appraise requests for funding, presentation of business cases to an investment panel, processing claims and monitoring.

1.3 To support Project Managers and Co-ordinators to develop, implement, maintain effective and efficient financial systems.

1.4 To support Project Managers and Co-ordinators assist in establishing and maintaining partnership relationships.

ESSENTIAL

Knowledge and Experience

Understanding of working in a business related environment.

Experience of working as a member of team.

Experience of writing reports, analysing and presentation of business data

Experience of project based work involving meeting challenging targets, milestones and outcomes.

Knowledge and experience of issues and challenges currently faced by business.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Ability to communicate information clearly, concisely both verbally and in writing, including presentation skills.

Ability to use IT systems to effectively monitor, co-ordinate, communicate and disseminate data and information as required in a secure manner e.g. Excel, PowerPoint and Word.

Ability to support effective project, financial, and monitoring systems.

Ability to work on own initiative to manage a varied work programme to meet specified targets and outcomes.

Ability to prioritise workloads to tight timescales.
