Responsible to: Project Manager
Purpose of the Post
To develop, programme and market a range of film events aimed at young and under- represented Hereford audiences.
The purpose of this project is to develop new or existing skills in the film exhibition sector, with the goal of growing a programme dedicated to young audiences and children. We aim to develop an appetite for collective viewing amongst young audiences and to deepen the quality of the cinema-going experience with wrap-around events that encourage interaction, conversation, and enjoyment of film. To work towards our goal, sessions will cover film programming, research and development, marketing, and events management, through which you will work with all relevant departments at The Courtyard.
This is an eight-month project which will begin with the Young Film Programmers exploring the community, building links with diverse groups, compiling a report on young audience experiences in Herefordshire, interviewing at colleges, schools, social venues and sharing their findings with The Courtyard. As part of the research and development time, they would visit other cinemas/arts centres on an ‘exchange’ tour, shadowing and learning from their programming and marketing teams.
The first project would be working on a ‘My First Film Festival’ for children and families in the summer holidays. While the event will already have been programmed, the young programmers will use their knowledge from their research to support the festival’s marketing, whilst also getting face-to-face experience with our audiences. They would then set up a launch screening to coincide with college/uni freshers’ weeks and continue to programme 1-2 titles per month with discussions/event elements around them with the support of The Courtyard. They would be given the Diversity Standards as a framework so some of their events would be expected to have a diversity/access focus, so either supporting a relaxed screening, or developing something new for a minority, or lesser represented, community in Herefordshire.
The Young Film Programmers would advise on our existing film programme, and we would look to develop a longer lasting strand of Young Audience work.
