Mars Space Ltd (MSL) is a SME established in 2007 and based in Southampton, UK, providing services and consultancy on space and plasma engineering and science. Our main areas of expertise lie in space propulsion, in particular electric propulsion, and the space environment (in particular solar radiation environments).

Since its incorporation, MSL has been involved in a variety of R&D activities in collaboration with several commercial partners and agencies carrying out the design, manufacturing, testing, and modelling of different devices and prototypes. MSL offers high level consultancy in the space propulsion market, helping customers dealing with high TRL devices as well as with novel technologies to exploit.

Mars Space has demonstrated its capabilities in designing and testing a full propulsion subsystem for cubesats, developing advanced concepts like the Dual-Stage Ion Engine and components, in particular hollow cathodes. Our extensive experience and varied background of our team provide a unique blend of expertise, enabling our company to add value to a large range of diverse projects.

MSL is currently undergoing a multi-million-pound laboratory facility upscaling, such that MSL now boasts one of the largest EP testing facilities within the UK and Europe. The state-of-the- art facilities consist of multiple walk-in vacuum chamber systems, manufacturing facilities and with a cleanroom expansion under way.

Mars Space Ltd is looking for an Experienced Production Technician to work on several new and exciting projects on the development of space electric propulsion thrusters. You will be integral to all aspects of the production of new thruster products and their constituent components, which will cover primarily a range of Gridded Ion Engines, from tens of watts to a few kWs in power.

You will join a small but highly qualified and experienced team of engineers (currently around 15). An attractive remuneration package including pension scheme, health care and bonus is on offer.

Person Specification

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The production technician is responsible for the following (but not limited to):

  • Development of assembly and integration procedures in collaboration with thruster responsible engineer and thruster PA/QA lead
  • Assembly and integration of thruster components by following defined processes and procedures
  • Assessment of supplier materials/components/data
  • Review of designs to include interface tolerance and material selection/compatibility
  • Use and maintenance of mechanical manufacturing and electrical tools
  • Support testing of thrusters and thruster components
  • Identifying non-conformances during manufacture or test and perform initial troubleshooting
  • Provide feedback on Processes and Procedures in order to generate lessons learned for the benefit of future projects
  • Maintaining tidiness and safe working practices in the production area and clean rooms
