This role entails…
As our Principal Costume Dresser, your main role is to ensure that everything worn by the cast and supporting artistes is in accordance with production requirements and that they are dressed in readiness for their call times. Preparing costumes from script, you will assist our Supervisors and Assistants in the preparing/checking of the scripts and continuity sheets and you will break down the schedule in order to discern costume requirements. Our Principal Costume Dresser will join us with experience of working in a costume capacity and will have the ability to sew and carry out minor alterations.
Your working environment will be a mix of studios and various locations.
Key responsibilities:
- Plan work activities and resources to ensure that artistes are dressed as required in readiness for their call times.
- Assist the Costume Supervisor and Assistant with the preparation of scripts and artist continuity sheets.
- Dressing and undressing actors and general care of costumes and accessories, including washing, cleaning and pressing.
- Prepare by reading scripts; collate and prepare costumes for actors for filming.
- Carry out repairs and any minor alterations to costumes.
- Breakdown the schedule in order to discern costume requirement.
- Able to deal with artistes in a positive and sensitive manner and with complete discretion.
- Work closely with the rest of the costume team and communicate accurate information to the rest of the team as required.
- Contribute to effective working relationships.
- Team Player – supportive to Supervisor; Assistant and Costume Design Office.
- Long-term assignments, to the Costume Design Office, will be scheduled in order to gain the knowledge; skills and flexibility required to support the overall costume operation.
- Contribute to creating a positive working environment, which meets health and safety requirements.
- Responsibility for the general care of costumes and accessories.
- Following continuity of all clothing, helping maintain costumes and accessories.
- Day to day contact and dealings with artistes and the rest of the production team.
- On set cover for Costume Assistant as and when required.
- Train and share skills and knowledge with less experienced members of the department and Work Placement students.
- For continuity reasons you will be assigned to a block, but will also be required to work on other episodes in between blocks.
- As a permanent member of the team you must also be adaptable and prepared to stand in for the Supervisor as directed.
To be considered for this opportunity you will need to demonstrate the following skills:
Minimum role criteria:
- A proven-track record of working as a fully competent Dresser on Emmerdale or other drama production.
- Professional Qualification demonstrating creative ability would be preferable i.e. Art/Fashion/Costume Design.
- Work long and unsociable hours, including weekend and Bank Holidays where necessary.
- Ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines.
- This is a physically demanding role, involving the carrying of costumes and other bulky items such as shoe bags; manoeuvring heavy costume rails and working out of a van on Location.You will be required to carry and move these items in both studio and out on location.
- Ability to sew and carry out minor alterations to costume.
- Ability to communicate effectively with artistes, maintaining complete discretion at all times.
- Work effectively with other costume teams during crossovers and fast turnarounds.
- Great interpersonal skills with all production and editorial departments.
- Due to the nature of the role, you will be required to be flexible with regards to working hours and discretion is a must.
- You may be required to drive to location, sometimes on short notice, and therefore a full driving licence and access to a vehicle is required.

- Good time management skills, able to work under pressure and to tight deadlines.
- Ability to take clear and concise notes that can be quickly read and interpreted by other members of team.
- An accurate eye for colour & detail.
- Flexible and adaptable. It would also be advantageous to acquire the skills required to upgrade to Costume Supervisor or to provide on–set cover for the Costume Assistant as and when required.
